Owner berated my father on his birthday brunch celebration, accused us of "ordering wrong" and stormed off.
My family and I had a reservation for brunch, celebrating my father's birthday that falls on July 14th, French Independence Day. We were promptly sat, served professionally and catered to in a very standard manner. When ordering, my father and brother requested a few changes to their sandwiches. One wanted a Ham Sandwich with Bechamel sauce, the other wanted a Turkey sandwich with no vegetables, no mayo. When the food came out, the Turkey Sandwich had lettuce, and the Ham Sandwich had no sauce at all. The plates were also handed to us incorrectly, causing a bit more confusion. We realized the mistake and called the server to send the food back.
We would not have minded if they redressed the sandwiches with the correct foods. Instead, the owner of the restaurant came barreling out of the kitchen and confronted us. He sharply asked "So what did we do wrong, you ordered the sandwiches and we gave you what your ordered." We attempted to explain what had happened after already letting our server know, but the owner was having none of it. He stormed off without addressing us. He returned about 10 minutes later to argue the same thing. My father did not intend on arguing with any food service worker today and simply wanted his sandwich. The owner continued to disrupt the dining room and assured us that we got exactly what we had ordered. He even brought the server's note, and when we explained what had happened, he realized that he was wrong and stormed off again. He did not return to the table, did not apologize, and did not let the server out of the kitchen for about another 10 minutes. We paid for our food and left immediately.
Despite the restaurant's ambience and kind service workers, the unprofessionalism, short temper, and ego of the owner will forever taint our image of this establishment. It is incredibly disappointing and embarrassing to be treated with such a lack of basic respect on such an important day for us. It felt like a Kitchen Nightmares episode, before Gordon Ramsey works his magic.
Note: My father is an accredited former Food and Beverage Director and Executive Chef. If this happened in his kitchen, he would have been the one to go out and address the family's concerns. He attests to the lack of professionalism and accountability the owner...
Read moreWith 6 days to go before Thanksgiving I received notification that the reservation I had made with Far From France a month before was cancelled, and that they would in fact not be open on Thanksgiving. They suggested I go to their restaurant some other day of the week!!
What kind of high-end restaurant doesn't realize that they're taking reservations on a holiday and then cancels them so close to the day? I called and spoke with the owner, who was neither apologetic or understanding of the difficulty of making a new reservation so close to the holiday. He told me they aren't ever open for holidays. I asked how I would know that, and how they could take a reservation for a day that they weren't open. Again, no explanation, implying that this was my fault for not knowing their schedule.
This is the second poor experience I've had with them, after an Anniversary dinner soon after they opened, waiting over an hour for my main course because I put in an appetizer request first, watching people seated after us finish their dinners. The owner told me then that it was our fault, that we should have ordered everything at once, even though the waiter never suggested that. To make up for it he gave us a few dried up macaroons that were probably too old to be sold. Disappointing.
I returned recently for a friend's party and had a reasonable experience, and thought that the management had probably worked out their process, so I would give them a try for this holiday. Only to have the reservation cancelled when it's essentially impossible to get another reservation. And again, unapologetically.
My suggestion: try Caprice or Brassier instead, two reliable restaurants that understand how important reservations are to...
