Gold Star — Restaurant in Wilmington

This is my new favorite "fast food" restaurant! We ate twice here over the last week while visiting the area and had consistently great meals both times.

We're from a bit higher, north and east, where we don't have these or much other offerings for chili in the authentic style.

Our first visit, we ate inside. Table service at a fast food restaurant was unexpected so we bumbled around a bit before sitting down and ordering. Our waitress was very nice and attentive through our whole visit. I had the 5-way regular and enjoyed the perfect ratios of chili to spaghetti to the heaping amount of shredded cheese. Every bite contained a great mix of flavor and it was over too soon. I additionally ordered a Coney with their habernero cheese and, while smaller and more difficult to handle than expected, was equally impressed. My wife had the classic chicken sandwich and enjoyed it too (we don't get pickles on our chicken sandwiches from any chain up north); she really liked the crispy french fries as well!

Our second visit was through the drive thru with nearly identical orders (still just as tasty) and the speed and friendly service here was great.

Overall, I'm just really impressed with what they've done with chili and I won't be able to enjoy the "competition's" offerings ever again. We'll go out of our way to...

Went to gold star last night and the girl at the drive thru cut my boyfriend off before he could say he needed his 5 way vegetarian. We waited at the window for her to come so that he could tell her that due to his food allergies he cannot have red meat and he needed the vegetarian chili instead of the normal chili. While we were waiting she was very loudly speaking to her co workers about how she can't stand people who order through the drive thru because it takes just as much time ordering through the drive-thru as it does to come in and order. When she finally got to the window he asked her if she could make the order with vegetarian chili and she said, "sure she'll get that changed" just to find out after he had eaten (it was marked vegetarian) that she didn't get it changed and gave him the same 5 way only regular. Update: Visited today which is the first day of their grand reopening after their remodel. I hadn't had their burgers since they had the soy/filler-filled burgers. These burgers are wonderful! My new go-to place for when I want a good burger. Fries were really good too. A/C was not working yet so it was way too hot inside. Drinks needed more ice, but that may have been mostly because the A/C wasn't working. Friendly server. Building needs to be at least twice as big. Very cramped!

Had their breakfast. Not a good breakfast. Everything I tried of their breakfast menu is subpar. And I tried a good amount of their fairly small breakfast menu. This location is also one of the worst for the regular Gold Star menu of Cincinnati-style chili. They seem to water down their chili more than other Gold Star Chili's.
