Merritt's Burger House — Restaurant in Wilmington

Definitely don't understand all the rave reviews on this place. Altough somebody saying it was "the best burger...way better than McDonald's" should have let me know that the bar might be set pretty low. The only good thing I experienced was the service. Not fast, but friendly. I ordered a cheeseburger and some hush puppies. The hush puppies were ok. They should dust them with powdered sugar and call them dessert though. They were more like a funnel cake flavor than a hush puppy flavor. The cheeseburger wasn't good. Dried out thin patty, I'm not sure if I had 2 bottom buns or if they just flatted the top but the bun was super flattened. Excessive amount of toppings (I asked for lettuce, tomato, mayo and mustard so it wasn't me asking for too many toppings it was them slathering on the toppings so it was 65% toppings, 20% bun and 15% burger) that overtook the already flavorless burger. Seriously. The burger had no flavor. Add some salt in the mix or something! I wouldn't have a burger here again. I'll keep looking for Wilmington's actual best burger because...

Merritt’s is a throwback for anyone looking for a drive in burger experience. At Merritt’s you pull up in your car and wait for one of the waitresses to come to your car window. You have the option of getting your food to go or on a tray that attaches to your window. They are cash only, open from 10-4, and there is no indoor seating.

They have a wide variety of items to choose from. I went with the BBQ sandwich and the chicken filet with fries and a sun-drop. After ordering it took about 15 minutes for the food to come. I recommend ordering ahead of you are in a rush.

The sandwiches are on the smaller side but priced fairly. The chicken sandwich is nothing to write home about but the BBQ sandwich is perfect. It comes tossed in a sweet BBQ sauce...

A Wilmington institution. You’ll find generations of family visiting here and working here. The absolute best Hot Dog not only in town, but the state of North Carolina. Amazing slaw that’s great on the hot dogs or by itself. The cheeseburgers are always good. Staff is super friendly and worked here for decades. It’s the kinda place I can roll up if I’ve ordered ahead and they know to bring me my food.

The Shrimpburgers and Chicken Sandwich are also great options. Fried chicken is always fresh and hot.

If I had to pick an essential place to eat in Wilmington, Merrit’s is gonna be on my list near the top.
