This was my first visit to Ruth's Kitchen. If you have been raised in the south as this reviewer has, you learn to have a healthy respect for establishments such as Ruth's Kitchen. Every good southern wise individual worth listening to understands that where there is no flash, no flare, and yet the parking lots not bare, there is likely to be inside a fare good enough to withstand tests of time, marketing fads and LED lighting.
Immediately upon entering Ruth's, I realized I was nervous, like walking into your grandparents' house with muddy clothes. Just as immediately, I was greeted warmly, and my anxiety was quickly subdued by the smells and sounds of a true southern eatery.
After seating myself I enquired about the tea, and was told "it's pretty good". Yes, yes, it was very good sweet tea, and I let the server know her modesty did not fool me, which she received with a laugh. After scanning the menu, I noticed liver and onions. For those who know, if a restaurant sells liver and onions, understand that they do not put something on the menu because it tastes bad. To consume prime menu space with liver and onions tells me one thing, order it. So I did. It has been years since I have had a good liver and Onions, I of course, paired it with rice and gravey with some fried squash. The Liver was very good, thinly sliced and cooked so as not to be sponge, the texture was just right, the onions were thick and soft and the squash was crispy enough to eat with your hands.
Ruth's Kitchen may not have all the flare of a more modern eatery but they unapologetically deliver the goods when it comes to southern style foods and so if you get the opportunity do yourself a favor and order the Liver and onions or anything else they carry because if they can get Liver right, they can get anything right....
Read moreI really hate to write this as I am a long time customer of Ruth’s. Today I had the worst customer service experience of my life there. We ordered, got the food, and I noticed mine was wrong. She came over to check on us and I told her the food was wrong and I restated what I had ordered. She picked up her little handheld computer for placing orders and said “that’s why I read your order back to you”. I was absolutely stunned that was the first thing out of her mouth. The fact was, she got my order wrong and then after I responded she doubled down and made it seem like we were at fault and she put the order in right. I have ordered the same thing from Ruth’s for over 20 years. Never waiver. I know what I ordered and she was way in the wrong to act like that towards a customer. Took no responsibility and was extremely disrespectful and rude. I’m sure she will have the day she deserves. Will be trying new places to get breakfast now. Goodbye Ruth’s. Lost a really good...
