Southern Sugar Saloon — Restaurant in Winchester

Cute little ice cream and candy shop in downtown Winchester, TN. I came by for an end-of-the-school-year treat after teaching my last class before the summer!

They were pretty empty at about 2 PM on a Wednesday, but those are certainly off hours. The inside is surprisingly large and very bright and spacious, with cute western-y decorations and a display of chocolates and candies on your left as you walk in. There's ample seating and it's open enough for little ones to explore without getting underfoot too badly. There's a cute little western-themed rule board that lets you know the protocol for getting candy and such. You can also get western-themed souvenirs like a cow patterned blanket or tumbler.

They have a large menu of special milkshakes and of course regular ice cream. In the interest of not blowing up my calories for the day, I asked if I could have a kids' scoop of ice cream and the pleasant employee said yes! It's nice to have more control over portion size while still getting a treat. :)

I ordered the mocha almond fudge, or something to that effect. I enjoyed it, and found ample nuts even in my smaller-sized scoop. I will say I was hoping for it to be more coffee-flavored-forward (a la Baskin Robbins jamocha almond), but it was heavy on chocolate flavor and light on coffee. Not a bad thing per se, just not what I was expecting. In the future, if I want something more coffee-ish, I'll have to remember that and switch it up. However, I love chocolate too and this chocolate was good, rich, and creamy.
