I had a choice. Here or Applebee's. I chose wrong. Let me explain.
I walked in the door and 4 of the staff passed right in front of me (over a period of several minutes) before someone, whom I can only assume was the owner, seated me.
A young man brought me chips/dip nearly right away.
My waitress came and took my drink order (didn't have what I wanted) and a menu. Brought back my drink choice and took my order.
Here is where it goes downhill fast.
After running out of "dip" (more like ketchup watered down), I waited several minutes and I finally had to ask someone for more. Not my waitress, she was nowhere to be found. That's Man #1.
After 10 minutes or so, Man #2 emerges from the kitchen and brings my food order. Small portions, but don't get me wrong, it tasted pretty good!
After finishing my meal, I had to wait for my waitress to come into line of sight to ask for the check. She brought it fairly promptly. After putting my credit card on top of the check and cleaning up my mess (I always try to do that) and folding my hands on the table, I waited around another 10 minutes before it was retrieved by my waitress and promptly (and in front of me) handed off to another young lady to ring it up for her, Woman #2.
Several minutes later, Woman #2 brings me my check, not before asking if it was mine, and handed it to me.
I promptly wrote in a small tip, signed it and was on my way to the door with absolutely no departure "Good bye", "Come again" or anything by any of the staff.
I travel all over the US and eat at many local restaurants and I don't like the feeling of being passed around like an old dish rag. That's how it felt.
They need a hostess at the front door, someone to see you in and out of the restaurant. They need to keep one person helping you at all time (except the chips/dip thing, that's understandable). Take your drink/food order, bring it to you, check on you periodically (without pestering you), bring your check, ring it up, etc.
After being handed off so many times, I'm surprised they could keep up with any of the tables on what stage of the process they are in.
And don't treat us single diners any differently (as it seems they focused on the 2 or more patrons more so than those of us sitting alone). Most of us tip fairly well.
That being said, a 1 star for the staff and 4 stars for the food. I rounded down as I felt I needed to shower after I left. Not a good...
Read moreMy goodness, I loved and missed this place so much! I recently traveled to Wisconsin with my husband, we were helping my mom move out to Virginia. Let me say, El Mezcal will forever be my favorite Mexican Restaurant. I remember when it first opened when I was a little kid and how much I enjoyed the food. Let me say, NO WHERE in Virginia has bean chimichangas (it’s heart breaking), so being pregnant and craving it, that is what I ordered. It was just as good as I remembered. My husband did love the salsa and found it to be one of the best- which I agree in all honesty. Everyone who was with us enjoyed the food and pretty much finished their entire plate. I look forward to coming back in the future with my children when we come out to visit family. Customer service is always excellent and everyone is welcoming. Hopefully the business never...
Read moreWaiter seemed to be agitated when taking our order. Threw straws on the table then sat our drinks at end of table. We both had iced tea so drinks could have been placed in front of us. When our order was brought out they sat the plates down, did not tell us they were hot and walked away. I have been there several times before this and we were always treated with respect ! I have the impression that the employees are feeling they are being discriminated against because of the DACA situation. I happen to be 1/2 Latino and feel their pain but just because you are serving white people doesn't give you the right to be disrespectful to them. I suggest they hold their heads up and show the public you are worthy of your citizenship ! Also, I was not impressed with the host that showed us our seats. Not sure I...
