Just got back from dinner at The Fox Den in Woburn with my fiane and two friends and had to share what a great place it is.
It is a super cute little place with a good vibe and was very comfortable. Surprisingly quiet for a Saturday night. Our waiter Aaron was very attentive and got us whatever we needed as quick as he could. They have a rotating menu of seasonal dishes so it seems like a great place to check in to regularly.
The menu is a really interesting blend of things from some fancy sounding salads, kale soup, angel eggs for apps, burgers, pierogis, paella, all kinds of things. For doing so many different things, I wasn’t sure if they could do it all well but we were all very impressed.
We started with the pierogis and got one of each. The classic was a very well done standard pierogi with a really nice pillowy potato filling and the dough was cooked perfectly. The second was an elote pierogi and that was super good as well. Great corn flavor and a bit of a kick! The third was beer can chicken and that one was really nice too. Tender chicken with a good seasoning. The last one was a spicy sausage that I didn’t try but my friend said had some heat and both she and my fiancé ate that one up quickly.
For our entrees my fiancé and the cubano with onion rings which he said was really good ate it all. One friend had Mac and cheese which she also said was very good and was definitely homemade and fresh. Her girlfriend had their El Frango sandwich which was a fried chicken sandwich which she said the ranch sauce on it was fantastic and the chicken was a nicely fried cutlet. She got potato salad as her side which I also tried. It wasn’t mind blowing but was a solid potato salad still. The potatoes were cooked nicely and it had a good mustard flavor on the potatoes.
The crowning glory though was the paella. I was incredibly skeptical on the paella because I have been served a glorified rice bowl all but one time. I was originally going to get the chicken schnitzel but after talking to Aaron, he sold me on it and changed my mind. It came out on a cast iron pan so when you dig in to the bottom, you actually get a bit of a crispy bottom. Still not a true socarrat but the closest thing I have ever had since the first time I had paella in Aruba as a kid. The rice is cooked well and not mushy, the seafood is cooked perfectly and the chourico is ground up in to small enough pieces that it mixes well into the rice and coats it all in the good fat, but also crisped up nicely while cooking.
We didn’t end up having dessert but Aaron was a gracious host and let us know to take our time and enjoy our conversation as long as we wanted and even kept coming around to refill waters and we were in no way rushed out the door.
If you’re looking for an interesting place to check out then I definitely...
Read moreMy family and I had a very unfortunate experience at the Fox Den tonight, without getting to actually try it. My husband, myself, and two children ages 4 and 2 walked in just after 4:00 on a Saturday. We are always mindful to go to restaurants early with young children. We have been excited to try the Fox Den as lifelong Woburn residents and patrons of many local establishments. We eat out with our children a couple of times a month and pride ourselves on our ability to keep them entertained, busy, and well behaved in restaurants. We have never had anything but compliments bestowed upon us and our children while dining out. Upon entering Fox Den, we were graciously greeted and seated by our waitress. My daughter immediately noticed they had stuffed pierogis which we were excited to check out as avid stuffie collectors. Upon being seated in a half booth, we requested a high chair for my son (newly 2). While waiting for his chair, he came to the booth side and was immediately scolded by another waitress who I can only assume is the owner based on her saying “Don’t stand on my seat”, since his feet were up on the easily wipeable standard restaurant booth seating. A bit shocked, my husband and exchanged a look but gave the woman the benefit of the doubt for scolding our toddler while he waited for a highchair. We ordered our kids’ juices immediately and began working to settle our children and take out their backpack filled with coloring books and toys to keep them occupied. A moment later, we had just received the highchair and were waiting for the juices. We began preparing to move my son to his highchair, and just as we were about to, he scampered along the booth to the empty and uncleared booth beside him. I immediately got up, picked him up, and began carrying him toward his highchair. The same woman again felt the need to turn away from tending to the table beside us and and scold my child shouting “Guys!”. It was truly appalling that we were so rudely scolded twice before even being given the opportunity to seat our toddler and get him occupied. Knowing that no establishment that treated my familt this way deserves our patronage nor money, my husband and I quickly collected our children and belongings and exited. We were truly looking forward to trying the food, drinks, and experience of the Fox Den but were met with pure hostility and disrespect. Please try harder to give your families of young children a moment to settle themselves without intervention, as I’m sure your restaurant has a lot more to offer than this...
Read moreI went in this evening, very unfamiliar with the area, to have a beer and possibly a small bite as my wife had a doctor's appointment around the corner. My phone is basically my work life and I noticed my battery was low. Anticipating this would happen, I brought my charger and my block with me as most establishments have some form of charging available. After ordering a beer and looking around for a charger I noticed an outlet slightly over the bar in a corner which had 0 occupants. I asked the bartender who was helping me (who was clearly in training, but couldn't have been any nicer) if I could use the outlet as I was expecting a call from my wife's doctor. He said NO PROBLEM! I slid over, all is good. Then the woman who was training him looked up and said, "what are you doing?" He explained and she just looked at us dead faced and said NO. No explanation given, nothing. I asked for my check, paid and left. The bartender helping me apologized, and I explained he did absolutely nothing wrong. I have been in retail management for 20 years. I've worked in "no public restroom" establishments, "no pets allowed" establishments and others, but have always made a judgement call when the situation warranted. The menu looked Portuguese heavy. My wife and her family are from Saint Miguel in the Azores. We would have definitely returned. Now. I will try and fit in to every conversation i have about that area to avoid this place like the plague as the "Leader", "Owner", "Manager", or however this person would like yo refer to herself as lacks compassion and...
