Had been meaning to go here since my we saw the artwork on the side of the building and noticed that a new place opened up! My girlfriend convinced me to go despite not my feeling very hungry, and we were greeted by the wonderful front-of-house man Mike. He was extremely welcoming, kind and thrilled to have us. We sat down, he walked us through the menu and we were very excited at the option of building our own bowl of pho. We each ordered a delicious Thai tea, which he happily gave to us on the house, along with some of his very moving life advice to young people after telling us his own story in response to ours. He told us that when life gets hard or things feel impossible that we shouldn’t stress; we should take a breath and a walk, talk to someone, have a quality meal and get back out there. On this particular day, the quality meal consisted of the ginger chicken wing appetizer, an order of dumplings, and a build your own bowl of pho with pork belly, shrimp and rice cakes on top of their deliciously rich and flavorful broth, silky noodles, and fresh toppings. The chicken wings were some of the juiciest and crispiest wings I’ve ever tasted, paired with a perfectly bright and flavorful ginger sauce. The dumplings were freshly made, perfectly seasoned and my perfect ideal of a dumpling. This was one of the best overall meals I’ve had in a very long time. You could tell everything was made with love and intention and a knowledge of their food and its flavors. Phoever Whatever is clearly happy to a part of the Worcester community, and for the community to return this favor with support and kindness will be a...
Read morePhoever has been on my list to check out ever since I am back in Worcester. I stopped by for lunch on Sunday and ordered the following: Crispy Ginger Chicken Wings: 4/5 stars. The wings were crispy, and you could hear the crunch each time you bit into them. The wings were well-brined, and you don't need additional salt for flavor. I removed a point from the dish due to the dipping sauce. It's too sweet. I believe the intent is to create a salty and sweet balance for the wings, but the sauce was overly sweet, which diminished the wings. I'd love the sauce to combine Thai sweet sauce, mayo, lime, red pepper powder, and minced ginger to make the dish more complementary.
Pho Dac Biet: 4/5 stars I appreciate the restaurant bringing a Northern Vietnamese Pho flavor to the area; Southern Vietnamese Pho is more blended in its flavors. You can taste the cardamons, star anises, and cinnamon in the broth (these flavors probably dipped later in the cooking process). It stands out among the Pho restaurants in the area. However, the beef broth must increase its intensity (by cooking longer) to marry the distinct flavors. I didn't taste enough beef in the broth, so it changed the dynamic of the Pho. The broth also lacks the flavor of coriander (cilantro). The remedy is taking stalks of cilantro and dipping them in the broth near the end of the cooking process.
Due to the humid weather outside, I was given a complimentary Thai iced tea. It was fantastic favor-wise. I highly recommend it. These are my thoughts for now, and I will update more in the future. I hope you try this family-run restaurant out to experience...
Read moreMy wife and I got a chance to try out Phoever Whatever on Park Ave last night and it was Pho-nomenal! Jokes aside, it truly was fantastic!
The location does have some off street parking behind the business. The transformation inside is quite impressive compared to what was in that space previously. It was quiet on a Monday night around 6pm but there were a few other customers and a few take out orders as well. They do not have a liquor license but you can BYOB.
Our waitress London was very kind and sweet and brought us cups with ice for our adult beverages to start things off.
For food, up first were the chicken wings, we generally try them everywhere we go so it's a good standard. They were breaded so I couldn't eat much but I did try the chicken minus the breading and it was delicious and my wife loved them. Think KFC style but better IOO.
For mains I had the duck Pho (special menu) with rice noodles and my wife had the chicken Pho which also had rice noodles though they do have about 8 or so noodle options. We both loved our dishes, the duck was some of the best I've ever had! It was crazy good and zero gamey even though they provided a fermented papaya (I believe) as a pallette cleanser to remedy that. The portions were gigantic, 1 can easily be shared.
I also ordered a Phoever Fried Rice to go. I wanted to have a couple of bites, an hour or two after dinner, while it still had a bit of warmth to it and I ended up eating about a third of it because it was delicious! It honestly might be my new fav fried rice in the area!
I'm not a Pho expert by any means but we both really loved...
