Updating my review to ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | 3-24-23
I finally got to come back to Ichiban! I was a former regular until they stopped dine-in, which they've now resumed. And I expected to be updating this review to five stars; as I said previously, the food and service are usually great. Despite that, I don't think I'll be coming back quite as often as I'd hoped, as AYCE is apparently only until 3 PM now. I'm pretty sure that wasn't the case before, and we didn't realize until we were already seated.
My mistake for not checking sooner, I suppose, but I'm still not a fan of that being the case. Prices are somewhat higher than other sushi places I've been recently, and without AYCE we ended up paying nearly double what we would have otherwise. Our choice to accept the situation in the end, of course, but we were already seated and knew the food was good there.
If you don't mind that or are able to come earlier in the day (I'm a special case, being disabled with transportation issues), I should emphasize again that the sushi is great, the atmosphere is nice (outside of a constantly coughing child at the table next to me, which wasn't ideal considering I'm mildly immunocompromised, but what can you do, lol), and the service was good, taking into account that they're currently short-staffed and got very busy later in the evening.
I should probably note that their short-staffing right now does show. The server seemed to need to be reminded about a few items that he hadn't mentioned would be delayed, and it took a while just to be able to get a glass of water, but he was very polite about the whole thing. Please be patient with them, they're good people, just very busy and shorthanded.
Old review (⭐⭐⭐): Ichiban, I love you, your food and service are usually excellent (which is why I was planning to go there for AYCE sushi for my birthday today), but for the love of all things holy, PLEASE make it more obvious your dining room is closed on either Google or your website (preferably both) so nobody else wastes their time driving 20+ miles to visit your lovely...
Read moreTo say that the service was terrible is an understatement. Went there around 1 hour before their closing time, wanting to dine in. Nobody met me at the door and I was looking for anyone to talk to. After I was finally approached by one of the staff while standing by the front desk I immediately made it known that was my first time at their place and asked for any recommendations. After picking a dish I liked while still standing by the front desk and not even being offered to sit I payed around 34 $ which I found too much but still added a tip. I was told to wait for 15 minutes which I did. At the end they brought my food packed in a bag to take out. I was confused and told them that I didn’t ask for a take out and wanted to dine in, to what they got aggressively disrespectful telling me that their dining in is closed. I was trying to explain that I mentioned the fact that I am a first timer and didn’t know anything about their work regulations to what I was told in an extremely disrespectful manner that I should have known that “anywhere in America” when you order food by the counter that means you take it out. I didn’t have anything else to say but that they are extremely rude and this is not the way they should treat their customers. They gave me the worst experience. Definitely not going there again and warning anyone I...
Read moreSushi, inparticular "Maki rolls" is some of the best food you can eat, in my opinion. I've went to many sushi bars/Japanese restaurants both downtown and in the suburbs (SW) of Chicago. I'm always on the lookout for my next favorite place to eat Sushi. So imagine my surprise when I discovered there was one not only within 10 min from my house, but one that rivaled the best downtown Chicago has to offer! The restaurant itself is a nice place with a very friendly & helpful staff. What my gf & I ordered came out surprisingly fast, but not "alarmingly fast". The spicy scallop roll was delicious. The other Maki roll I ordered, a specialty roll, was the Godzilla roll. The size of it was probably big enough to fill up Godzilla! Very delicious, along w/ being plated beautifully. My gf & I both ate until we were full & there was still enough to take home for a midnight snack. All this for about half the price or less than getting the same amount downtown. They also have many Chinese food dishes you can order. Ichiban hasn't seen the last of me, I will be dining in or ordering out many times to come. 5...
