Usually in Asia I tend to shy away from restaurants that seem to cater too much to westerners as i feel like they tone down the flavours. When i was deciding weather or not to come to Yummy 1 I was having such a hard time deciding if this was one of those places. On one hand, there was no spelling mistakes in the name, on the other hand there was so much morse information than just the name. The chairs were not little red stools, but they were still plastic.
I decided to give Restaurant CatBa Yummy 1 - Cheap Local Cuisine and Seafood (i capitalized Seafood, but note that the correct title is with a lower case) a try. I went for the southern style noodles which i was a bit unclear on what they were but i’ve had so much pho and bun cha lately i wanted something different.
The food here was pretty good. Actually some of the best food i’ve had on Cat Ba so far. Even though it did seem quite westernized i was really happy with the flavour of the food. It was also not a greasy oily chewy mess like some of the other local places here.
I will definitely be coming back here, or maybe to number 2.
Also for a westernized place it was cheep. There are spots in town without english menues charging more for Pho to foreigners than this place. They were not joking when they put cheap...
Read moreWe stayed in the hostel above and had heard this restaurant had some great reviews and was rather popular so found ourselves dining here as soon as we checked in! Unfortunately though, expectations were not exactly met. We ordered some grilled oysters with yellow mustard and they were ok (nice enough) but certainly had no mustard on them. I have attached an image of said Oysters. The topping was chopped onion and a tomato - based sauce which was rather overbearing! We also had a grilled fillet of fish and rice, which was average! You could cook this stuff at home for sure. The Banh Mi on the menu is pretty shocking considering it’s a Vietnamese chef. It’s nothing alike to a Banh Mi - it is a cheese and ham baguette with lettuce and tomato and no sauce. This was probably the worst out of the 3.
Other than that, the Aussie lads working there temporarily were chatty and nice and the local staff seemed kind, though service could be rather slow in terms of catching their attention or finding them at all at times to pay or request more drinks!
Overall, we wouldn’t run back to Cat Ba for this, but it...
Read moreWe came here because of all the great reviews. Don’t really know how there are so many good reviews, the food we ordered here was really disappointing.
We ordered 2 “Vietnamese banh mi”, which came as shown. It was described as “sandwich with pork and vegetables”, which was more accurate to what it was. It was massive portion, with a piece of lettuce and stir fried pork inside. We were just expecting an actual Vietnamese banh mi thit, and we received a really westernized giant sub sandwich with none of the usual ingredients of a banh mi (coriander, pickled carrots, pickled radish, pate, and no sauce at all, it was just dry). I ate about 1/3 of it. I ordered a mango sticky rice as well, the sticky rice became hard after about 2 minutes, and wasn’t warm when it came out.
2 stars because the staff were very nice, and the mango smoothie was ok. The food was quite affordable, but I’d rather pay a bit more for better food down the road. Maybe the western dishes are better,...
