They have some very kind people working here. There is no question about that. But it doesn't excuse the other aspects of the restaurant's conduct.
-I initially ordered a squid dish. Despite the very high price, the portions were very small and the "squid" was just like the lowest grade of basic calamari. It was not a substantial amount of food for the price at all. The cooking was absolutely nothing special. I was still OK enough with the overall experience that I was going to order another item to be full and leave.
-I next ordered the "Red snappe with turmeric." My feeling was that I almost got food poisoning (which previous reviewers state happened to them!). My feeling could be wrong, and I can't know for sure. But the fish I ordered tasted extremely strange (and not good at all). After I pointed this out, they initially refused to do anything, claiming it was just "fat" on the Snapper. They are charging a higher price than I have ever paid in Central Europe for a comparable fish dish, and yet they initially wanted to argue about this.
-They eventually agreed to not charge me for the fish. But when it came time to pay, they stated there was a surchage for a credit card payment. This is not disclosed anywhere on the menu. Worse still, they could not tell me WHAT the surcharge amount was. First, I heard 3%. Then, I heard 5%. Then, I heard 3% again. All of this lack of clarity or disclosure is outrageous. But when the waitress was calculating my bill, she added nearly TEN PERCENT as the surcharge. I asked her multiple times to correct this, even showing her my phone as a calculator, but she kept arguing back.
-Finally, I had to use almost all the cash in my wallet to pay them. Getting correct change itself was then a Herculean feat. I got dozens of tiny 1,000 and 5,000 dong notes.
Overall, this was a crushingly sad experience for a restaurant I was excited to visit. Based on his previous comments, I now expect the owner to reply by explaining how "hard" the restaurant works to "please foreigners." I don't doubt that this restaurant works hard, and that the employees are very kind. All businesses work hard if they are any good at what they do.
But please try to understand this from your customer's perspective: If we get food poisoning that is bad enough, we could be HOSPITALIZED. It could DESTROY our plans in Vietnam or, depending on the severity and where we come from, even RUIN us financially and in terms of our long-term health.
Whether you like your customers or not, without your customers, you don't have a business. So is getting angry at or trying to shame your customers for talking about food quality issues a sensible thing to do? Why not just immediately apologize and make sure this never happens again?
Is it hard to have clean and fresh food, clearly disclosed credit card fees on your menu, generous portion sizes, and standard amounts of change when you are charging Central European prices for local Vietnamese food in Hoi An?
I was so happy with how nice the employees were, and I am so sad to be the one who has to point any...

This family-owned restaurant has been running for over a decade, and it’s immediately clear why it has stood the test of time. From the moment you walk in, you’re met with warmth and genuine hospitality – the staff are incredibly friendly and go out of their way to make you feel welcome, creating an atmosphere that feels both personal and relaxed.
But the real magic happens on the plate. We’ve been travelling across Vietnam and have enjoyed some fantastic meals, but this spot has truly set a new standard. The food was, without question, among the very best we’ve had in the entire country.
We ordered the aubergine with lemongrass, pork ribs, and a beef pho, and each dish was absolutely outstanding. The aubergine was fragrant, rich, and perfectly balanced with the aromatic lemongrass. The pork ribs were tender, flavourful, and beautifully cooked – falling off the bone with ease. And the beef pho? As a massive enthusiast of pho, I can confidently say this one ranks right up there with the very best. It had a completely unique character – deep, rich broth, incredibly fresh herbs, and a distinct flavour profile that makes it stand out from anything I’ve tried before.
What makes the experience even more impressive is the exceptional value. The prices are extremely reasonable, especially considering the high quality of the ingredients and the care that clearly goes into each dish.
I can’t recommend this place enough. If you’re anywhere near the area, make a point of coming here. It’s the kind of meal that stays with you long after the last bite. We’ll absolutely be coming back – it’s an experience that deserves to...
