Being our honeymoon, I booked the Full Moon Dinner around 6 months prior as a romantic surprise for my wife. The experience boasts a special selection of cocktails and canapes reserved for the full moon evenings and served on the lower deck. This is followed by a “signature a la carte” dinner on the main deck.
We arrived dressed up at the advised time of 5.30 and were taken to a table on the main deck. I said we were here for the Full Moon Dinner and were looking forward to canapes and cocktails on the lower deck. I was met with a blank stare of incomprehension, the waitress replying that the lower deck was closed. Alarm bells ringing, I reiterated and was told we could go and sit on the lower deck if we wished.
The lower deck was indeed closed, however a waiter brought over a standard café menu. No cocktails were offered, so we ordered beer and wine. When we had finished the waiter presented us with a bill to pay prior to going upstairs for dinner. During that time, they had hurriedly opened the lower deck bar, but by then it was too late.
Dinner on the main deck was no better. No sign of a “signature a la carte” menu, just the same menu that everybody gets.
We both found the food quite disappointing; nothing really stood out from standard café and pub food. A la Carte it was not.
The Full Moon Dinner debacle put me in a really sour mood and essentially ruined the night for me. On the plus side, the décor is exquisite, and the location unparallelled. The gorge was bathed in the gentle light of the full moon, which rose gradually above the horizon, providing us with some memorable photo moments.
Despite my wife’s remonstrations, I decided to raise it with the manager. He was just as baffled as the staff. I showed him the website and he was clearly oblivious. He agreed that the description (obviously) didn’t match the promised experience and that he would take action. To his credit he refunded our lower deck non-canapes and gave us two free shots of Amarula.
The website still contains the same erroneous information. My advice is don’t be fooled by the website – the staff and management know nothing about it and you will be disappointed. Other than that, it’s a great place to get some spectacular views, sip a drink and enjoy...
Read moreBeautiful place, BUT the way we were treated there today was horrible!!! My friend Dennis and I sat for over an hour without being served. Finally we waved down a waitress who brought us the drinks menu. The waitress apologised that we had not been served. Before we could even place orders, this other waiter, along with the manager Clement told us we had to get up and move because we were seated at a reserved table (mind you, no one said anything for the hour we were there, and the table was not marked “reserved”). We were rudely asked to get up because the people who reserved the table were there. So, in front of everyone, we were forced to leave the table as the “white people that booked the table” were standing right beside the Manager and this rude waiter). When we complained about how we had been treated, and that the situation could have been handled better - the manager could have cared less, and showed us a sign that said “wait to be seated”, basically telling us it was our fault because we didn’t wait to be seated. Yes, we didn’t see the sign when we can in an hour ago, but whole lot of waiters saw us come in, sit at a table and did not say a thing. The whole situation could have been handled a lot better but the “we don’t care” attitude from the manager and staff was so off-putting that even when they offered us another table we didn’t even want to stay. Very bad experience! I’ve never actually seen a manager and staff that treated customers that badly, and couldn’t even be bothered. As an African, to be treated like less of a human being by fellow Africans is heartbreaking and disappointing to say the least. I love Vic Falls but I will never go back to that...
