If you plan on visiting Algiers, I absolutely recommend to stop by la Place des Martyrs, which is located at the center of the city, close to the Casbah. It's one of the first spots that the French army took over when they came in 1830. They named it ''Place du Gouvernement''. In 1962, when Algeria became an independent again, they renamed it ''Place des Martyrs''. It's easy to get there by public transit since the metro station line 1 was recently extended. The location was surprisingly very clean considering that we're in Algeria.

This is an interesting place to visit and gives a clear indication that Algiers is not a tourist destination. There is a massive street market which is fascinating to walk around however there are zero tourist or souvenir shops around the square or in the area. Its still a great place to visit to see how the locals live and see a few of the more iconic landmarks in the city.

Visited on a sunny winter day. Perfect weather. Lots of markets off to one side with a lot of licals shopping. I was told to watch my pockets here. Right next to the Casbah so you can keep exploring there. Good old and new architecture. A mixture of F rench and traditional architecture.

Martyrs' Square (Place des Martyrs) is one of the most important and symbolic places in Algiers, the capital of Algeria. Located near the port in the old part of the city, this square is a powerful reminder of Algeria's struggle for independence from French colonial rule.

The square is named in honor of the many Algerian freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives during the war of independence, which lasted from 1954 to 1962. In the center of the square, there is often a symbolic structure or monument that commemorates the martyrs.

Martyrs' Square is also surrounded by historical buildings, traditional markets, and old mosques, such as the famous Ketchaoua Mosque. It serves as a cultural and historical hub, attracting both locals and tourists who want to learn more about Algeria’s rich history.

Today, Martyrs' Square continues to be a place for national events, public gatherings, and moments of reflection. It stands as a symbol of bravery, sacrifice, and the enduring spirit of the...

Martyrs Square in Algiers is a very interesting and historic place to visit. The square is surrounded by old buildings and is home to a bustling public market that sells a wide variety of Algerian products such as honey, herbs, toys, souvenirs, ceramics, and wooden products. It is a great place to get a taste of local culture and do some shopping for unique Algerian products. The market is a great place to find traditional Algerian crafts and handmade items, and it is also a great place to try some local food and drink. Overall, Martyrs Square in Algiers is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in experiencing the rich culture and...
