I have waited some time to post this review in order to give the salon a chance to remedy things. Unfortunately, this has not occurred. In addition to a botched highlights/balayage job, there have been several key issues that have lead to a damaging experience. In chronological order, these are as follows:
When booking my appointment I emphasised that I'll be taking a longer lunch break from work to ensure there's plenty of time for the service. I specifically asked how long a half head highlights will take and blocked out the time that was advised (1.5hrs) accordingly PLUS an additional 30mins just in case so I could get back to work on time. In reality, the appointment ended up taking almost 2.5hrs and I was late for work. This was frustrating as I had clearly communicated that I have to be back at a certain time.
The stylist spent about 20 minutes tempering my expectations in a bizarre manner after simply showing her a photo of the colour I wanted (very simple look to achieve - only a shade lighter than my natural colour). She kept saying things like "I want you to know that if you don't like it, we can change it" and repeatedly emphasised on the point of something going wrong with the colour and allegedly trying to reassure me before the job even started. This was a very strange experience and one that I haven't encountered anywhere else despite having this very regular colour service over many years elsewhere. In hindsight I can now see that the stylist was not confident in her work (despite allegedly working many years) and was almost gearing up for mistakes to happen (which they did). Not only did this put me at unease during the appointment, it contributed to running very late and made me nervous about what will end up with my hair.
When the stylist wasn't apologising in advance for me not liking the colour and second guessing things regarding the technique, she resorted to asking some very personal questions that were outside the scope of the usual friendly small talk one could expect at the hairdressers. I was uncomfortable being asked so many questions about my partner and family situation including personal remarks about "family roles" and I was surprised the stylist did not pick up on my reluctance to engage with the judgemental and nosey comments. I did not get the impression she meant any harm, but it was inappropriate.
The head massage/basin wash was rushed, frantic and a bit painful.
The colour was a shade I was happy with, however, unfortunately, the technique was poor (as she has feared it would be). Despite me emphasising how I wanted a natural look with a subtle transition in coloured sections, I ended up with abrupt patches of bleach to the back of my head and at the front, most visible when hair was brushed back into a ponytail.
I sent through some photos to the salon expressing my disappointment at the results and was offered to come in to fix up the top of my head. The original stylist suggested darkening certain areas to make it look less abrupt. However, this turned out to be a suboptimal technique as a second stylist stepped in and offered a better solution of adding a few more subtle highlights to achieve a better outcome. Thankfully, this was put into effect, but I fear it would have been even worse if the second stylist didn't step in.
I was due to come back to get the patches on the back of my head fixed, but I'm still waiting on the salon to call me with an offer of an appointment. I had to miss the initial booking as I had an urgent work matter, however, I asked the owner of the salon to please let me know when they next have availability for certain days/times. It's been several weeks now and no call or follow up.
Overall, a terrible experience and would not recommend. Clearly the salon has some competent stylists, but it's very hit and miss and I have not received any satisfactory outcome still which speaks poorly of their...
Read moreIf you have concerns about breakage donât just mention it to your hairdresser, ensure you make it clear what you feel needs to be done to help prevent further breakage. Unfortunately I thought theyâd take the necessary precautions if I mentioned it but after my head massage they only brushed my hair after they put the dye on and at the wash bowl they only brushed once everything was washed off. If they brushed before putting the dye on and when the conditioner was on then there wouldâve been less resistance against the brush at the more fragile stages causing less breakage.
Please learn from my mistakes and donât just assume a hair dresser will automatically do whatâs best for your hair/ donât be scared to advocate for yourself if you feel like they could be doing something thatâs better suited to your hair. I realise now I shouldâve spoken up when they started doing what they did instead of thinking everything will be fine because theyâre hairdressers and of course they know what theyâre doing⌠Iâd rather someone potentially be annoyed that Iâm critiquing their way of doing things than end up with extra breakage that couldâve been prevented.
I also felt like it was darker than the colour on the photo I was shown which I initially put down to the fact Iâm so pale at the minute so I didnât question it but the more Iâve looked at it the more Iâve realised itâs not that which makes me wonder if it was done purposefully as my hairdresser mentioned at the start of the appointment she could put something on it if it didnât turn out to be my desired colour and Iâm pretty sure she said a toner which Iâve seen on the website wouldâve been priced as extra. This is obviously just a theory as thereâs no way of knowing for certain this was the case, it could just be that she wasnât confident that she could achieve the colour she showed me.
Thankfully itâs demi permanent so will fade over time but I got it done so it was fresh for my holiday so itâs a bit frustrating.
Overall though the staff were really pleasant. The only reason Iâve given a 2 instead of a 3 is because for the price I would expect better care...
