Today this small island in Lake Burley Griffin, which is home to the National Carillon, is renamed as Queen Elizabeth 2 Island on the 3 ofJune 2022.
For her Platinum Jubilee, and Queen for 70 years on the Throne in the United Kingdom. Queen of Australia 🇦🇺.
The man made Island was called Aspen Island for 58 years (1964 - 2022). ASPEN is a common name for certain Tree 🌳 🤔 species.
The carillon was designed in 1967, built during 1969 and completed in 1970.
Queen Elizabeth 2 (1926 - 2022), officially opened the National Carillon on 26 April 1970. 50 th Jubilee of the founding of Canberra.
The tower stands 50 metres ( 160ft ) tall.
The National Carillon has 57 bells, it was initially with 53 bells, and increased to 55 bells, during refurbishment in 2003-4.
2019 - 20 upgrade the carillon with a new clavier, a fully replaced transmission and additional of 2 new bells.
One bell is called the Ngunnawal bell, in recognition of the first People of the Canberra Region.

Read moreThe Carillion is a lovely monument gifted to the Australian people. I visit it often at night as I'm doing a colour series of photos of it as it is lit up in different colours. (can be searched on instagram under #ambonightambosights). The Carillion stands on Aspen island that is easily accessed by the foot bridge and there is parking and public toilets near by. Often there are swans near but please don't feed them bread, it's bad for them. Some chopped lettuce is OK. There are recitals by carillionists and sometimes special events such as a Star Wars one on the May the 4th!! Need to book for picnic space for that but generally just turn up. Beautiful story about John Douglas Gordon giving free lessons in bell ringing to all comers.. Wheelie friendly but not much parking and it would be nice to get some more info whike you're there about the bells, history, images of what's in the tower etc etc. Still a "must see" visit - one of many highlights of Australia's spectacular Capital City!! Exoloo Toilets along the way - reasonably clean but well provisioned and in most cases door lock and flush touch free. Water and toilet seat...
