After over 100 years as a much loved, and visited municipal park, Edwardes Lake Park is a surprisingly lovely place to go for a 10 minute break, lazy afternoon, or the family BBQ. 100 year old trees, acres of lawn, ducks, swans, playgrounds and more. Quiet winding pathways lead around the lake through rejuvenated wetlands alive with fogs and water birds. The public BBQ’S, seating and kids adventure playground are well patronaged, but good upkeep. And around the perimeter of parks Northern border, a Lawn Bowls club, Scout Hall and Skate park sit just your beyond the line of sight down by the lake shoreline. The park is also home to Athletics clubs, a 400m rubberized athletics track, and a Historic A2 class Steam train. A highly successful type, designed and built in Melbourne, and once a common sight across the state. Thomas Edwardes gifted the land to the people of Preston in 1914. Work commenced to plant many of the largest trees still growing in the park. With construction of a dam and a weir, the official ceremony was held in 1920. Water quality has been a major issue over the past 50 years due to increasing urban expansion along the Edgars creek catchment, killing fish, contaminating the lake bed with oil sludge, and eventually leading to the closure of the Rowing Club, and the Sailing Club which once called the lake home. Recently improved water management of Edgars creek and the creation of wetlands, will hopefully rejuvenate the lake, wild life, and the...
Read moreI went on a Wednesday when it's usually difficult to get a table. Plenty of parking spaces though three were taken up by a camo army truck with a statue of Medusa affixed to the front grill. Luckily I viewed it through my rear vision mirror so was not stoned. I also saw the owner of the truck teaching a Doberman to attack on command. Undeterred I made my way inside. I was greeted by a large Swan being cool and doing dope Swan stuff. After being ushered to my place in an old train engine, I began to wonder if I had the address wrong and my date had meant a different train in a different park. After asking a staff member for water I was directed hastily to the lake and told to get in but something seemed fishy. It was the fish, and just as I reached for my phone which had slipped out of my pocket and was sinking to the muddy floor of the lake, I heard my name being called. I looked up and saw a bright light quickly approaching. Suddenly I was back in my bed at home in regional Victoria with no idea what had happened. Was the lake real? Was the Swan a staff member or just a Swan? Did Medusa really give birth through her neck post decapitation? Are trains a thing? All of a sudden a ping from my phone and it's a notification demanding I review this park! All in all a distressing experience, though I did like learning about trains. Four stars and an extra star if staff can confirm that this is a real place and not a manifestation of my insomnia and vivid imagination. Need...
