Three of us came down to visit a friend in Australia, but the weather wasn't amazing. What could we do instead? An escape room! Here I review three of the escape rooms we did at Excape.
When we first called, there were three rooms available. We chose Dr. Frank's Laboratory, where the Dr. had been trying to create a storm, as we're all scientists and fancied a bit of a science-based fun.
We had SUCH an amazing time solving the clues, finding all the relevant puzzle pieces, racing against the clock and working as a team! Without wanting to give any spoilers away, this was the best escape room I've ever done (I've done 5-6 prior to this visit). The clues were so clever and well thought out; the puzzles were just the right level of challenging while still being satisfying to solve. One of us had never done an escape room before and she said this was the perfect introduction to the concept!
It was perfect for four people. There was a lot for us to do, everyone was actively contributing, and there was never a moment when we were just empty-handed or waiting for others. However it was still very doable.
We had such an amazing time that we called right up an hour after we'd finished and asked if we could come back the next day! This time, we chose the FCI room. Our challenge was t rescue a kidnapped hostage before time ran out.
This was less activity based and more puzzle based. A lot of the information was readily available, but just had to be puzzled out (unlike the first one, which had a lot of stuff which had to be discovered, or found). It was definitely a more challenging one, but it had the same clever puzzles and twists that we'd already come to expect from the first! Nothing was what we thought it was, and we were totally immersed in the fiction.
I would recommend this one to people who prefer thinking-based puzzles, rather than activity based puzzles. There was a lot of information and it had to be analyzed carefully. It was also more challenging than the laboratory one, though again we found it worked really well with four people to solve it in time. This one was also a bit darker as there was a video playing of the captive the whole time we were trying to escape, which was frightening (but in a good way).
As we left the building and had a pint, we started thinking... there was one room left! We called up our host and she very graciously let us come back a THIRD time to try our wits against the zombie room.
This one was a good mix of the first two types of rooms. There was a lot of puzzling, but there was also a good element of using clues you had to find around the room. There were quite a few surprises for us - after two rooms, we thought we'd seen it all but that was definitely not the case! Lots of twists and scares still to be discovered. I would recommend this one for people who prefer more activity, less puzzle.
Overall, we had an amazing time trying to escape three rooms in three days - if we're ever back in Frankston we will definitely come see if there's a new one for us to try! My personal favorite was Dr. Frank's lab, but all three...

Perhaps gaming isn't the right word so let me elaborate. You, and a group of friends, are locked into a room and asked to escape within one hour. Sounds easy ... it's not!
The first time we went we did the Zombie room. SOOOO much fun was had. Being plunged into darkness and having to find the light and clues to stop the world from being over run by Zombies was funny, challenging and entertaining. We completed the room in 33 mins! Somewhat proud were we!
The second time we visited (just recently) we decided to try the CSI room. Now, I'll be the first to admit I was a little over confident walking into this room. We were adamant we would be done within 30 mins. Sadly, we were not! It was challenging ... mentally challenging. Four of us were in that room trying to piece the clues together and it was a testament to team work and listening that we managed to escape at all.
It was hilarious and humbling and we are going to go back and do their final two rooms in the very near future.
If you've never tried one of these escape rooms then do! You won't regret it. The most fun I've had with my friends in...
