What a magnificent historical building! The triangular pediment on the projecting portico at the front is embellished with the words ‘Town of Emerald Hill’ and the municipality’s coat of arms, indicating that the building was originally called Emerald Hill Town Hall when South Melbourne was known as Emerald Hill. It's a very large building as together with the Town Council, it was originally built to house essential, educational and community services including the Public Library, the Court House, the Post Office, the Police Department and the Fire Brigade, and later a Baby Health Centre and a Commonwealth Bank office. However, today it's occupied by the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) and the main hall has become a concert venue. The building's facades on all sides are very detailed however the wide front (south facing) facade with it's projecting portico is a standout. However, the dominant feature of this Victorian building has to be the central tall multi-stage clock tower with it's large turret clock. Something I didn't know, the Town Hall is available for hire for group activities, private functions, celebrations, business, training or community meetings

Modestly situated in the back streets, this was a delightful surprise while exploring the streets of South Melbourne. It's quite impressive and will be appreciated by anyone interested in architecture or history.
