If you love the blues, this is a five star experience waiting for you.
I recommend doing this when it is daylight savings so you get to enjoy the views of the water until late into the night. It got dark pretty early on our trip which was a shame. But the views we enjoyed when it was light were pretty exceptional!
Dancing whilst moving in an old red rattler is quite the experience. Highly recommend for the giggle value. Not many danced in our carriage.
Moving between the four carriages at every platform is fun.
It would be a perfect way to party if you could fill a carriage with your friends.
It would also be great if there were more food options available at each platform rather than just alcohol. Desert on the platforms in between performances would be good as there is a lot of milling around on the platform in between gigs.
By the time we got home at 12:30am we were all so hungry and sat up having a late night snack. Not something I ever do but we danced all night and worked up quite the appetite.
BYO metal bucket for transporting your drinks is a good idea to keep your drinks from toppling over. Regulars buy a Blues Train metal bucket which they bring with them.
You can’t take any drinks out of the venue so keep that in mind when you buy drinks. Or the other option is if you are happy to swill at the gates before you exit. 🥴
BYO munchies is something I would recommend for when you are sitting around listening to music.
The night we did the Blues train there was a restaurant train on another line. We went past it on our way then got stuck when the restaurant train broke down blocking us from returning to Queenscliff.
I really felt for the musicians who had to perform extended sets. In our carriage we had the lone musician so it was much harder for him being on his own. But he did a great job of keeping us entertained.
So it was a much later night than anticipated as we got back one hour later than normal. But it was a good fun time!
Make a weekend of it and stay somewhere local. Highly recommend for an indulgent weekend away.
We needed an extra ticket for the night so do make use of their ticket exchange platform if you need to buy or sell tix. We luckily got a call on the morning of the event and secured an extra ticket. The event was sold...
Read moreWhat a huge disappointment the Blues Train has become.. What started out as an exciting gift to be given, the expectations of a wonderful evening with dinner and entertainment on the much loved Blues Train is now a drunken rowdy all you can drink and be pissed night.
Lined up to be served our first set of drinks missing out as stock ran out half way down the line, yet those in front walking with 3 cans under their arms and 3 in their hands. Then, causing the departure to run over 1/2 an hour late.
Each stop, the drinks debacle getting worse with those already drunk getting more and more intoxicated yet the sober ones still being told there's nothing left. Yet again the end of the queue missing out.
On the 3rd stop asking for a red wine only to have the young man bring back a bottle of white sparkly not understanding that I asked for red wine, him stating this is what is left. 10 minutes later another walks past the train window with 3 reds in her hands.
By the time the last stop for drinks came around no more alcohol was announced, wow, how exciting, more water!
$175 for a train ride with 1 glass of red and all the water I could drink.
Your once amazing meal now a nibble box with the most disgusting cheese, warm and probably, festering salami and a slice of another meat accompanied with rubbery wafers and warm hummus. The only safe edible things, 6 olives for 2 with 2 carrot and 2 celery thinly sliced sticks
The only plus were the bands but sadly also now, they had to line up for their drinks between sets. Once off the carriage after everyone else only to end up at the back of the line.
For much less, one could go for a great meal and drinks of their own choice at one of the amazing jazz and blues clubs throughout Melbourne.
Sadly I cannot recommend this to another but can only compare it to a desperate over 40's drunken bogan ute muster with an attitude of all you can drink, piss up. What a sad turn around for what was once an amazing reputable and entertaining evening for all who attended..
The one star is only given to represent the amazing bands and also to the workers who have no control over the new mismanagement of...
Read moreOur group of 4 enjoyed a Saturday night Blues Train experience. It was a very cold night but fortunately we did not have to wait long to board our carriage. While we waited our turn to be called to the buffet meal, we were able to purchase our drinks for the first part of the evening. There are some negatives about this experience and one is that we could not bring our own water on board and had to pay $5 for a bottle of water. I didn't mind that there was no BYO for alcoholic drinks but think the policy on water should change. The buffet had more than enough food for everyone. It's quite a crowd, 208 passengers if fully booked which it was that night. The food is fairly average - good quality but certainly not fine dining. Although you could go back for seconds, I did not feel inclined to eat more. The quality of the wine available was OK. Eventually the train was underway and we spent the next 3.5 hours enjoying 4 different blues entertainers. Each was quite different but all exceptionally enjoyable. The 2 bands really got the passengers energised and there was a lot of dancing and singing in the carriages that had room for this. During the second act that we enjoyed, there was one person who appeared to have drunk too much and was spoiling the experience for others who wanted to enjoy the music or dance without interference. At the next station break that individual disappeared and I hope that it was management security that took the initiative to remove him. So there were some negatives but I have to rate the total experience as a 5/5 - it is really unique and a fun time. My taste in music is broad but I could enjoy the...
