Did this trip a couple of weeks ago. Despite, wind, rain and cold, overall it was a reasonable day. A bit disappointed we couldn't get all the photos we'd hoped, but not too bad. The staff were friendly and helpful. Everyone we dealt with, was anxious to assist. We had booked the four hour trip for a Thurs. and the Gordon River cruise for the Fri. Just before we were due to leave Brisbane, received a call from the lovely lady at the Wilderness train apologising that the train wouldn't be running on that day and could we transfer it to Fri. After explaining our predicament, she contacted the cruise people and arranged to swap our days, and because we had been inconvenienced, booked us on the all day tour. Unfortunately, it did become too long a day, with the train having to reverse a fair way back to a station to collect a guy who had been hurt while kayaking, and take him to Queenstown. The train, staff, commentary and rain soaked views were great, however, the 'lunch' at the Queenstown station, was disgusting. Everyone pre-ordered and received tickets for the lunch well in advance. It was all super efficient and organised. On arrival at the cafe, we were seated at tables awaiting our order. Hubby had the salmon, which was OK, but luke warm. I had ordered the chicken. The cold leathery stuff was so removed from a decent chicken meal, I couldn't eat it. Others at our table said the same but 'didn't want to make a fuss'. When the waitress came to collect I told her it was disgusting, and she simply shrugged her shoulders and walked away. I was in hospitality for many years, and if you know you are expecting a certain number of guests, you ensure you 'get it right'. The day was great, but the catering staff could lift their game. I would recommend this trip however, as the history is amazing. Fine weather (is there such a thing in Tassie???) would make it perfect.

What an amazing experience! We were so lucky we could secure seats with WCWR. We heard that many people left disappointed not able to get on the train. Originally booked for the full day journey (Strahan - Queenstown return), they called 3 weeks prior that it was cancelled and they moved us to the half day option. The partial refund was processed immediately. In this covid era, changes / cancellations happen all the time so we were just happy we still can experience this. There are 3 carriages, and I *think* each could fit 26 people across 8 tables (5 booth tables fit 4 people, 3 tables fit 2 people). But most likely due to social distancing they only put one booking in each booth. As a couple, we were very happy to get the booth just for the two of us. The seats are comfortable, big windows make it easy to immerse the rainforest views and we can access the balcony anytime in the journey. Emma, who was serving our carriage, so friendly bubbly and helpful! The ticket including meals (starters, morning tea, lunch, dessert) that are really good. Not to forget coffee tea hotchoc or still water are complimentary and you can order them anytime. Compared to the train ride we did in Cairns QLD, this one was SO MUCH BETTER. Really recommended whether you are traveling solo, as couples, or families.

The West Coast Wilderness experience is interesting but not exciting. If you are happy to sit and enjoy the beautiful rainforest and river views for five hours, then this is for you. It was very relaxing, with comfortable seating and several people in our carriage took the opportunity to catch up on some sleep. But that could also be because there was no wifi on the journey. There was an opportunity to learn about the track’s history from the very passionate host, with snippets from personal recounts from her ancestor. Unfortunately our carriage didn’t have great audio though and often the sound system cut out. Our TV displaying the route also wasn’t working. The train stopped at two abandoned stations, where you can walk around and enjoy the rainforest. One of which you can order snacks from, if you have cash. On the last stop, we enjoyed honey tasting from the local hives. Unfortunately there was a lot of abandoned old tracks and maintenance equipment left on the side of the tracks as well as rubbish along the route. Please note that they advertised the trip as four hour half day, but we were gone for five hours. So take that into considerations with your itinerary and I suggest to pack snacks and drinks too.

I was very disappointed with the "river and rainforest" half day tour, departing from Strahan, as its description mentioned that our journey will take us into the "mountains of Tasmania’s rugged west coast", but the "river and rainforest" tour only travels at maximum 40m elevation, moreover the hills around us were maximum 400m high... the rainforest was nice, but that tour is absolutely not a good way to access scenic views, as advertised. I love tours in old trains like this one, and it was mentioned on their website that "The West Coast Wilderness Railway is being recognised as one of the world's great railway journeys"... I was expecting a great tour, better than every other old train tour I did in different countries, but it was far from the expectations I had (I read that this tour received many rewards from 2015 to 2019 as the best tourist attraction in Tasmania : honestly I enjoyed my three weeks holidays in Tasmania and was delighted by most of the tours I booked -even some which didn't receive any rewards-, except the "river and rainforest" tour on the west coast wilderness railway)... I absolutely don't understand how it should have received the "best tourist attraction" rewards every year during the last 5 years ! I decided to book it, as I read excellent reviews, and knew it received many rewards, even if its cost is quite high (similar to a 6 hours Gordon River cruise which includes a buffet lunch, but the river and rainforest tour only lasts 4 hours, and is not including any food at all, not even a morning tea)... that tour definitely doesn't worth the price I paid !

The staff in the train was friendly, but when I contacted the management to let them know about my disappointment, and advised them to update their tour description to avoid their client disappointment, their only answer was that I didn't read the description nor looked at the map of the tour... I answered that I did, and the only map found on the tour page is showing that I will travel from Strahan to Queenstown : I asked them to send me the map showing that the tour will stop in Dubbil Barril, and then return to Strahan... it's been more than a week, but I never received any answer !... The map on the website is still luring their potential clients : be very careful before booking that tour ! Moreover, further to my 1 star review on trip advisor, the management answered publicly, blaming me by writing that I didn't read the description nor the map (even I answered them immediately to inform them than they are wrong)... they never updated their website : that company is definitely trying to sell dreams to their clients but once we contact them to inform them about our disappointment, they answer very quickly to blame us, then never answer...

Sorry but the trip was awful, unfriendly and very upsetting: spoilt by the behaviour of the staff member on duty who was terrible towards me. I have a recently acquired disability and lifelong friends of the family came to visit us and we chose a wilderness railway experience for the 7 of us to take together. It turned out to be a day tour best cancelled. It was embarrassing to be treated as an inconvenience and I was ignored and then treated as an inconvenience when I was boarding and exiting the train and it was even worse when I had the audacity to request a glass of water during tea/ coffe/ snack time upon the return journey. After asking 4 times for a glass of water and being ignored despite gaining the staff members attention I gave up..my fully abled husband intervened and I eventually received some water. Our friends were disgusted in your staff member's gaslighting behaviours -the point is why should I have needed someone else to intervene on my behalf to gain service? It was even more embarrassing when our friends commented on the treatment I received by staff as it was observably disgraceful and they noticed the staff behaviours towards me over the entire trip. People with a disabilty or mobility challenges are not an inconvenience to be spoken to derogatorily nor treated as invisible or with disdain. It was very uncomfortable and I was relieved when I could leave the station and return home to Strahan. We are paying customers along with anyone else booking to take the train ride. In addition my husband and I brought 5 other guests to support your railway experience. I wasn't asking for any special treatment but I do expect the same courtesy to be applied to me as other paying guests. Your team need a big dose of training in customer service delivery and to treat all guests with dignity regardless of whether they have a disability or not. Also it wouldn't hurt to ensure that when you take customers out that the toilets are stocked with handtowels..the trip thankfully was short - and while we understand the need for repairs the trip at the moment is disappointing but we understand that the repairs are ongoing. We thought we were being supportive by booking a group to use your service. I would like to have been able to travel again when the line is fully operational to experience the full trip but I don't think we will be because I don't want a repeat of my very poor experience. I live locally and frequently host guests and have actively recommended the wilderness rail trip but after my experience this tourist experience unfortunately will be last on my...
