Relaxing & peaceful with the best views of the harbour.. great for exploration of an old historical site turned nature park... I came here a few years back.. It Was more of a abandoned industrial oil refinery built on top of the cliff head of ballast point.. It was Quite unique in architecture with beauty views of the city but it was not developed into the picnic nature area reserve that it is now.. It was not as shaded by many shelter areas or trees... As is now.. The make over of the site is creative & great for a day out by the Harbourside it's not too far away from the Balmain ferry wharf the walk from mort bay park to ballast point park is a 10 to 15 min stroll.. The stroll is enjoyed by viewing the Sydney harbour from the back angle & other nearby harbour sites.. Centre point tower is visible from here as is blues point tower.. as you walk along the Balmain/birch grove harbour you will be able to view balls head reserve as well as Barangaroo reserve it's a beautiful scenic stroll that would not feel like exercise.. As we walked we found that many bring their pets to the local Harbourside for a stroll with them.. By watching the Harbour-side you may also be in for a little surprise.. & see a shark or two popping there heads out to grab a bite to eat such as seagull or flying fish.. As we were shocked to see such a sight.. Interesting to note female sharks like the harbours curved bay's as they come here to raise their pups.. To protect them from the open ocean.. So I heard in a shark documentary see for yourself.. If you plan to take your dog here you have to keep your dog on a leash as requested by the council also this prevents your beloved pet dogs from jumping into the shark infested bay & becoming shark food for 6 foot sharks that are seen here... This place May also be a good fishing spot as I have seen a few do along the...
Read moreAbsolutely love this place and thrilled with the ethical standards that brought it to life. Leichhardt Council ( I think) worked to return this OIL Refinery to nature. They used as many sustainable practices as possible and reintroduced indigenous Australian native plants to the location. The reuse of the industrial site and many artefacts plus the imaginative inclusion of some of the infrastructure e.g. Lawns within the storage tank area appeals to me.
There are many hidden gems here for any age and great recreation and social uses. Really love the art installation I've taken so many photos of it.
Personally I would love for the community to encourage /assist the Council to instigate a regular planting plan here.
Every year add some more Indigenous plants and features to assist in increasing the biodiversity in the area.
It would be a wonderful way to educate locals on indigenous plants and uses whilst improving the biodiversity of the area. 🤔There could be gardening workshops and maybe a local group of school children who help with the maintenance and planting to learn about NSW plants and traditional...
Read moreThe best park in Sydney? There's far too many for any normal person to make that claim but it'd have to be close.
Sustainable, ecological and beautiful; this park is an absolute gem. Where else can you visit an meticulously designed park that has great views of the harbour west of the Bridge? Buy some fish and chips from Balmain and make the short drive out here or even host your birthday party here - I know a few who have. The lower areas are quite protected from strong winds and the grass is very comfortable plus the amenities still look and work like new.
From personal experience the park seems to be very safe, even so at night when the lights come on to illuminate the main central walkway down to the water. It's at that time you'll find a few friendly fishermen and locals...
