The Bondi to Bronte Coastal Walk squeezes a whole highlight reel into a couple of kilometres. You start with Bondi’s curve of sand and that bright ocean pool clinging to the headland, then the path rises and the Pacific fills your field of vision. Spray hangs in the air, banksias rattle in the breeze and the rock shelves below boom as sets roll through. It is lively without feeling crowded first thing in the morning, a mix of runners, pram pushes, swimmers with goggles around their necks and visitors stopping every few metres because the outlook keeps changing. Mackenzies Bay appears like a stone amphitheatre, Tamarama offers a pocket of clean sand and punchy surf, and Bronte arrives with its grassy park and heritage baths cut into the southern rocks.
The walking itself is straightforward but never dull. Boardwalks glide above fragile dunes, then a string of stairs lifts you to the next headland for another angle on the cliffs. Benches are placed where you would have stopped anyway. If you are tempted by the water, you are spoiled for choice. Slip into Icebergs for salty laps, time a dip at Tamarama between sets, or finish with a float in Bronte Baths or a quick wallow in the Bogey Hole when the tide is kind. Coffee and breakfast are never far away, which makes it easy to turn a short stroll into a relaxed morning out.
A few things help. Start early for cooler air and softer light, carry water and sunscreen because shade is patchy, and wear shoes you are happy climbing in. The route includes stairs, so some sections are awkward with a pram, but buses from Bondi Junction make it simple to begin at either end and ride back. After rain the rocks glisten and the sea goes slate blue, in winter you might spot whales from the lookouts. However you pace it, this small stretch delivers big views and that happy, salty reset you only get from walking...

Read moreA fantastic excursion away from Central Sydney. Bondi Beach is easily accessible by Hop-On-Hop-Off Tours or by public transport. There is a bus route from the Circular Quay directly to Bondi Beach but it does take 40 min. An alternative is to take the train to Bondi Junction Station and then connect to one of the bus routes to go to Bondi Beach. The day we were there, our bus went past the station and the line-up were very long for the connecting buses so it was a good decision to go directly by bus.
Bondi Beach is spectacular and sure is popular with the locals and the visitors. The coastal walk starts at Bondi Beach and goes to Tamarmara Beach, Bronte Beach, Clovelly Beach and Coogee Beach, all along the coast and is essentially flat. We were there on a very hot day but it did not seem to bother anyone. We were lucky to be there during the Sculpture by the Sea event and saw many outstanding sculptures, from the very simple to the spectacular. An additional benefit from the event were all the water and sunscreen stations. I don't imagine they have those on regular days. Unfortunately, we did not manage to finish the entire walk and finished at Bronte Beach. We simply caught a bus there back to the Bondi Junction Station and then...
