Read moreOne of the very ORIGINAL HISTORIC buildings of Australia. It's just a short walk from the Parramatta Park gate to OGH & the 100 acre Park is really lovely with its green well maintained grass & lovely old aged Trees, to lounge around on any Spring or Summer day. The OGH Tour Guide was excellent re information about the history of building & its Governors. No food stuff is allowed to be consumed in OGH due to the history & age of the furniture & there are NO Toilets inside. Toilets are outside at the rear, assumed to have disabled access. However, Unfortunately the Resturant at the rear of OGH has been permanently closed as is also the Tea house near the Park entrance. So advisable to take a flask of coffee or bottle of Water or Sift drink & a sandwich. They plabmn to have a coffee shop at the rear later. It is owned by the Government but they do not get automatic funding & have to keep applying. It's a 15 mt walk from Parramatta Station, or Bus Exchange, or Westfield. It is well worth the visit. There is a small entry charge. Disabled access is very restricted as it was built more than 225 yr ago. I also doubt they would allow wheelchairs onto its historically preserved floors. Parking in the Park is a bit restricted & the traffic can be quite busy, so watch where you cross. Went to see Back to Black exebit of Women's clothing c18791960. Walked in without any wait. Quite a small exebit & very quick to view on the 1st Floor. I spent just over an hour inside inclusive of the tour guide & you can come out & picnic in the Park later. 1 point less is for no access to...
Old Govt House in Parra is a fantastic historic site to visit. The volunteer staff from the Trust are very friendly and helpful. After you enter the site, you can ask for a tour of the house and a volunteer will take you around and unlock the house itself for you and take you on a guided tour. The guides are very knowledgeable and have numerous stories and anecdotes about the artefacts of the house and history of the site. There is also an exhibition space upstairs which you can wander around after the tour, which is curated by one of the staff. Unfortunately, the on-site cafe in the barracks building is currently not open as no one has taken up the lease to run it, but hopefully it reopens in future as the tables on the veranda would make for a lovely place to have a nice...
Read moreNot as grand as I expected it to be. But still a respectable, memorable historical place that took us back 200 years in the past.
Reception staff lady was very nice and welcoming. One of the main tour guides greeted us and familiarized us with the place, before doing his other duties (and that's what we visitors preferred). The other guide, who had good knowledge of the house's history and Parramatta, gave us good information about the house's items and what they were used for.
My only is gripe that we didn't have to be followed all the time in the house as it seemed awkward. At times we did want to be alone with the family and take photos. But we didn't want to be rude by telling the guide we're fine and we can get by in the house alone (as some other...
