Parramatta Park — Attraction in Sydney

Located at Pitt Street and Macquarie Street, Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia 🇦🇺 This beautiful park is a wonderful place to bring the family. The park is 160 years old and is full of history. You can make use of the several picnic shelters and also the many BBQ facilities which all run on a first come first serve basis. You can use the large grassy areas to set up a picnic on the ground. There’s two children’s playgrounds in the park, first there’s the Paperbark playground which is located near the George Street Gatehouse. This is a new playground ideal for toddlers and children with mobility issues and wheelchairs. The second playground is the Domain Creek playground which is located opposite the Queens Road Gatehouse. This playground is suitable for all ages. There’s public toilet facilities, including accessible toilets, located throughout the park. Dogs are welcome in the park but must be on a leash. There’s parking, including accessible parking, located throughout the park. There’s a wonderful cycle track which is a 3.2km loop lane which is great for cyclists of all levels and shared paths. This loop also connects to cycle lanes travelling along the Parramatta River and all the way to Sydney Olympic Park. The loop is also used by walkers. You can walk to the many historic sites around the park. There’s a fantastic outdoor amphitheatre located at the centre of the park (called the Crescent) which is used for concerts and events. The amphitheatre is adjacent to the Old Government House and is connected by stairs to the Boer War Memorial and the Historic Bath House. The Old Government House is the Oldest Surviving Public Building in Australia and one of the 11 Australian Convict Sites listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Register. It was the ‘Country Residence’ of the first 10 Governors of New South Wales. It is open to the public as a Museum Thursday to Friday 10.00am-4.00pm and Saturday to Sunday 11.00am-4.00pm. You can take guided tours. To the north of Old Government House and overlooking the Parramatta River is the Dairy Precinct. This is also one of the 11 Australian Convict Sites listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Register. The precinct features the Dairy and Rangers Cottages and grounds. The Dairy Cottage was constructed between 1796 and 1805 by an ex convict and is one of the oldest intact cottages still standing in Australia today. The Rangers Cottage was built around 1870. These are just a sample of the many historical sites that Parramatta Park have to offer. You also have Government Farm which was the first successful farm established in the Colony. You have Rumsey Rose Garden which has one of the largest collections of heritage roses in Australia. You have the Old Kings Oval and Doug Walters Pavilion which is home to the Parramatta District Cricket Club and more. There’s several cafes that you can go to in the park, including Lachlan’s at Old Government House, Good George by Circa which is a pop up cafe located in the George Street Gatehouse, Misc Parramatta which offers Mediterranean cuisine and the Gatehouse Tea Rooms.
