Located in the inner-west suburb of St Peters, Sydney Park Wetlands is one of Sydney’s most successful examples of urban ecological restoration. Nestled within the larger Sydney Park, this area is easy to access via public transport or car, and sits adjacent to Sydney Park Road and the Princes Highway—making it a convenient green escape close to the city.

Covering around 40 hectares, Sydney Park as a whole is one of the largest inner-city parks in Sydney, and the wetlands form a significant and visually striking part of the park’s southern and central areas. The site was once a brickworks and landfill, but now hosts a beautifully designed system of ponds, vegetated swales, and reed beds that support stormwater harvesting and native biodiversity.

The wetlands are made up of four interconnected ponds, surrounded by boardwalks, grassy hills, and walking trails. The water is not only scenic but serves an important ecological function—filtering urban stormwater and supporting a wide range of birdlife, frogs, and aquatic plants. It’s common to see black swans, ducks, herons, and other native bird species.

This area is especially popular among locals, including families, dog walkers, runners, cyclists, nature lovers, and photographers. The wetlands have become a tranquil retreat for those looking to escape the noise of the city without venturing far. Children love the nearby playground and wide open spaces, while fitness enthusiasts enjoy the jogging loops and exercise stations throughout the park.

In terms of time, 1.5 to 2 hours is a good amount to explore the wetlands at a relaxed pace. You can stroll along the boardwalks, sit on one of the many grassy knolls to take in the view, or enjoy a picnic by the water. For those with more time, combining a wetland walk with a broader circuit of Sydney Park (including its hilltop views, skate park, and cafe) can easily fill half a day.

Overall, Sydney Park Wetlands is a vibrant, restorative space where urban design and nature meet. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, it’s worth carving out some time to experience this peaceful and beautifully landscaped...

Delightful nature park, not too far from the Sydney CBD. Several bird species were observed, including ducks, water fowl, cormorants, a pair of Black Swans, and the ubiquitous Ibis. The ponds also contain fish, during our visit we also saw an eel.

Sydney Park is a nice place to visit to get away from the hustle-bustle of the city, it is fairly quiet, save for the noise of traffic near the park boundaries, and the occasional sounds of aircraft taking off from the nearby airport. Well maintained walking paths criss-cross the park, if you do elect to step off the paths, remember that this is a dog-friendly park, so tred carefully lol. Having said that, I did observe several dog owners diligently cleaning-up their dog's mess, and the 100 or so dogs I saw all appeared to be well socialised and on their...

This beautiful spot is ideal for bird watching. There are benches nearby to relax or one can go for a leisurely walk. Frogs could be heard, though I couldn't spot any. It's much appreciated that such an island of beauty exists within the city.

The area is dog friendly. There are a few cafes, within the park, not far from the wetlands.

A visit is highly...
