Erected in 1971 to mark the bicentennial of Cook’s voyage, the lighthouse was notable for being the first in the world to experiment with a laser as a light source. However, the laser proved ineffective due to its narrow beam and was replaced with a conventional electric lamp in 1975.
The structure comprises four concrete columns, each marked with the cardinal directions, and a bronze sculpture suspended between them. The lighthouse stands 20 meters tall, with a focal height of 44.5 meters, and emits two white flashes every ten seconds, visible up to 11 nautical miles.
In 2022, structural issues prompted a significant refurbishment of the site. Completed in mid-2023, the $6.5 million upgrade included enhanced facilities for Marine Rescue NSW’s Point Danger Unit, improved accessibility features, additional parking, and the introduction of the Black Dingo Cafe, offering scenic views of Duranbah Beach and the Tweed River.
Visitors to the memorial can enjoy panoramic views of the coastline, making it a popular spot for whale watching during migration seasons. The site also features informative plaques detailing Captain Cook’s explorations and the area’s maritime history. The addition of the cafe and improved amenities has enhanced the visitor experience, providing a pleasant environment to appreciate the historical and natural significance of Point Danger.
The memorial is easily accessible by car, with parking available on-site. Its location on the Queensland-New South Wales border makes it a convenient stop for travelers exploring the Gold Coast and Northern...

This is a place that gives me rest and peace. You may be lucky to see turtles dolphins whales in our beautiful waters and Beaches. You will always see...
