Erected in 1971 to mark the bicentennial of Cook’s voyage, the lighthouse was notable for being the first in the world to experiment with a laser as a light source. However, the laser proved ineffective due to its narrow beam and was replaced with a conventional electric lamp in 1975. The structure comprises four concrete columns, each marked with the cardinal directions, and a bronze sculpture suspended between them. The lighthouse stands 20 meters tall, with a focal height of 44.5 meters, and emits two white flashes every ten seconds, visible up to 11 nautical miles. In 2022, structural issues prompted a significant refurbishment of the site. Completed in mid-2023, the $6.5 million upgrade included enhanced facilities for Marine Rescue NSW’s Point Danger Unit, improved accessibility features, additional parking, and the introduction of the Black Dingo Cafe, offering scenic views of Duranbah Beach and the Tweed River. Visitors to the memorial can enjoy panoramic views of the coastline, making it a popular spot for whale watching during migration seasons. The site also features informative plaques detailing Captain Cook’s explorations and the area’s maritime history. The addition of the cafe and improved amenities has enhanced the visitor experience, providing a pleasant environment to appreciate the historical and natural significance of Point Danger. The memorial is easily accessible by car, with parking available on-site. Its location on the Queensland-New South Wales border makes it a convenient stop for travelers exploring the Gold Coast and Northern Rivers regions.

The Captain Cook Memorial and Lighthouse at Point Danger, Coolangatta, is a historic and scenic landmark commemorating Captain James Cook’s 1770 voyage. Unveiled in 1970, it was the world’s first laser-powered lighthouse (now inactive). Perched on a stunning headland, it offers panoramic ocean views, with opportunities to spot whales (June–November). The site features informational plaques, coastal walkways, and picnic areas, making it a great stop for history buffs and nature lovers alike.

One of my favourite places. With wonderful views of the ocean and area to walk and enjoy the beauty of our shores. There is a beautiful cafe to stop and enjoy lunch or breakfast. Carparking can be hard but its worth driving around the area to find a spot. I can honestly say it is beautifl. One side QLD the other NSW. My wife says I am a creature of habit - every tine I go to stay in Broadbeach I always drive to view our shores remembering that not so many years ago it was not so peaceful with many ships sunk along the shoreline. This is a place that gives me rest and peace. You may be lucky to see turtles dolphins whales in our beautiful waters and Beaches. You will always see...

Straddling the NSW/Qld border, this Memorial and Navigation Beacon has one of the most spectacular coastal views you'll find anywhere. A favorite spot for commemorative photos or magnificent selfies. At the base of the lighthouse Point Danger Marine Rescue Volunteers maintain vigil over, and communication with, coastal and river traffic. For those who believe in karma a couple of gold coins tossed into the quaint Wishing Well is sure to be beneficial. Cold drinks, ice creams are available from the Souvenir Shop and a receipt is available for larger (Tax deductible) donations to this volunteering organisation, for which heaps of good karma is available. A memorable spot for a...
