Beautiful little UNESCO village in the Wachau Valley with the famous blue Baroque stift. Durnstein is also famous for the castle ruins which held Richard the Lionheart captive as well as its vineyards. A walk through the old town is a lovely experience with many shops selling local products to souvenirs and keepsakes. The castle is about 30 minutes uphill walk but the view over the Danube is well worth it

It's definitely worth a visit. We went on a Christmas Market river cruise in December, and there were a couple of tour groups costing the abbey but that was all. Some shops and hotels were closed, but the shopkeepers in the ones that were open were very friendly. I imagine it is more lively .. and crowded...in the summer. The church is extremely ornate with many saints' relics

This is quite a modest little town which gets very crowded with cruise ships and seems to cater mainly for those seeking apricot liquor of every description. There is a very good hotel here which we had no time to explore. This town is alleged to be where Richard I (the Lionheart) was held to ransom before being broken out by Blondel. The castle itself is a ruin.

The ruined castle above the town is a heck of a climb but the views are fabulous. The town itself is small but very attractive with lovely shops. The castle is where Richard I was held prisoner. Legend has it that the bard Blondel found him by singing outside the castle and you will see references to both of the men all over town. A lovely place to visit.

V 13. storočí bol v meste Dürnstein založený kláštor klarisiek, okolo ktorého v 14. storočí vyrástlo mesto. V 15. storočí bol kláštor klarisiek zrušený a prevzatý do užívania rádom augustiniánov. V roku 1710, teda 300 rokov od založenia kláštora augustiniánov, bol Hieronymus Übelbacher zvolený prepoštom. Budova bola v zlom stave, preto sa rozhodol pre barokovú prestavbu podľa novej koncepcie a bol koordinátorom umeleckých programov. O kúzlo interiéru i vonkajšej architektúry sa postarali Joseph Munggenast, Jakob Prandtauer a Matthias Steinl. Ikonická modrá veža je ozdobená vzácnym reliéfom krížovej cesty. Na korune je oslávený kríž: symbol víťazstva Krista nad utrpením a smrťou. Pod krížom stoja štyria evanjelisti ako Kristovi tlmočníci a štyri obelisky na veži nesú obrazy apoštolov. Sú to svedkovia Krista, jeho života, utrpenia a zmŕtvychvstania.
