WE PAID 1020 EUROS FOR ONE NIGHT!! This Hotel is the worst Hotel I’ve ever been to. It started with the food in the restaurant. I ordered something of the menu where clearly was no meat mentioned. The dish tho contained almost only meat. Then my main course, the ravioli, was drowned in butter. I couldn’t even pick it up with the fork that’s how oily it was. My boyfriend ordered pasta with tomato sauce and you could taste that the sauce was store bought. Then forward to the night. It was almost midnight and there was a 20 cm Centipede in my room along with 3 big spiders. I was obviously scared and called the night doorman. He didn’t offer any help and told me on the phone "what am I supposed to do" and seemed extremely annoyed. After repeating myself many times and explaining that I am scared he told me, I could have another room to sleep in. I asked him twice to come and remove the centipede or call someone to do so, but he said that wasn’t his job. So when we got to the reception, to get the other room, he assured me twice that the room wouldn’t cost me anything since I booked the villa for over 1000 euros. So he assured they wouldn’t charge us. When checking out the front employe that worked on Wednesday August 6th 2025 at the time of 10:45 am, told me I have to pay 120 Euros additional for the room. I explained that the night doorman said something else, but the women was very very rude and only started a Discussion with me . We didn’t even use the bathroom in that room, we only slept in the bed. The women said we should be thankful that we don’t have to pay more for that small room. On top of that my boyfriend called beforehand, to ask if the parking space is wide enough for his car to fit and they said yes, but when we got there the car couldn’t pass the entrance, because it wasn’t wide enough, so the car stood outside all night at a parking space with a shield saying that it would be towed. So all in all this is the worst place I have ever been to and I would recommend getting a hotel room somewhere else in melk or Krems, because this is definitely not a 5 Star hotel and a big...
Read moreI felt immediately at home as soon as I checked in. My 10-night of delightful stay over Easter 2025 ended just too quickly! ||A most sophisticated destination with its superb period decor, elegance, charm, ambience, location, service, staff and most importantly, great food, especially since opportunities for dining out in that small area is very limited and April nights are too cold to go out!||The castle hotel and its imp[ressive wine cellar are owned and operated by the Thiery family and they are seen on the property each day tending to just about everything: from check-in desk to restaurant service and even including arranging the fresh hand-cut flowers adorning tables in each common area of the vast property. Their personal touch could be felt and was certainly appreciated.||The impeccably well-mannered and well-groomed staff, coming from a diverse number of countries is rare in the region. Their ability to strike up a conversation in different languages besides just German and English is refreshing and counts as an additional credit for this hotel's image. Spanish, for example, is rarely heard amongst staff of hotels in Austria, much less in tiny Duernstein.||I am a serious Foodie and without hesitation I say, indeed, meal times were always a high plus on my score sheet of experience at Hotel Schloss Duernstein. Everyday I looked forward just to waking up for my food times! With a diverse menu at both breakfast and dinner, one never gets bored. The presentation is always superb, the dining areas sophisticatedly elegant, making everyday and brand new delightful experience. My dinnertime favourite remained the extremely tasty starter: marinated asparagus tips and fried shrimps! The marinated swordfish comes very close too! The main course offers as vast and as...
Read moreThis review is long overdue; we stayed here 2 years ago. There's a strange confluence of old and new at this place: on one hand, it's full of antiques, but the bathrooms are modern and there's a Tesla charging port in the driveway! Pros: Lovely view of the river during lunch or afternoon tea. Modern, clean bathrooms in the hotel rooms. Quaint old-fashioned teapots during breakfast. They produce their own jams! This region specializes in apricots so they make their own apricot jam. We were given a small jar of it upon departure. Restaurant food was pretty good.
Cons: it felt more like a big mansion than a palace. Service was generally slow at the restaurant. I came for tea time and sat at one of the tables; one server walked by, looked at me but didn't acknowledge me, and then after waiting quite a bit another server came up and finally asked for my order. River view during dinner at the restaurant is moot because it is so dark in the evening aside from the hotel's lights, that you can't really see much. This is also not a place for noisy/energetic groups; there's a pool table in the living room but it's old, and also since it's near the other guest's rooms they ask you not to play during the sleeping hours. There was no iron in our room (due to it being a fire hazard), and the hotel did offer a free pressing service, but you need to give your clothes to them by 4pm or something like that. We arrived at the hotel after the cutoff time so I couldn't get my dress ironed for dinner that night. Finally...Europe is known for a no-tipping culture but the room guidebook actually stated that the hotel workers depend on hotel guests tipping, because it's difficult to get hotel staff to live and work in Wachau. I would prefer to just pay higher hotel fees than to be guilted...
