Basilika St. Michael — Attraction in Mondsee

This is the cathedral where Captain von Trapp married Maria in the Sound of Music. The outside is Ok and we were trying to figure out out of all the beautiful churches in Austria what they would choose this one. I think part of it is the proximity to the Mondsee Lake where they filmed the boat ride and the bike ride. I also think the central doors and the grand stairs leading up to the alter were very grand. The art was over the top decorative. We went for a Sunday mass and the choir and organ were wonderful. They concluded the service with a wine gathering outside. I think that was unique to this Sunday but how do I know? They literally spent 15 minutes off the service talking about their wine venture and the priest blessed...

Basilika St. Michael is such a beautiful church. It's in the quaint little town of Mondsee. Absolutely worth the drive. We arrived rather late in the day. Didn't take pictures inside as it's an active place of worship. This is where the Sound of Music marriage scene was filmed. Majestic interior. However, it's not the actual place the wedding took place between Maria and Captain Von Trapp. When we arrived, a very sweet local old man was there and shared a lot of information about the church with us. Go inside the the catedral and you can find very interesting shop that sells are religious stuff and post card. Next to it there is museum that showcase Mondsee history.
