The area itself is very beautiful and we enjoyed the trip down, the food arrived quickly which we only got as a light snack to sit down for maximum 15 minutes. The problem arose unfortunately with the waiter and service we received. First we had the male waiter laugh at our order for ordering their staple dessert which we shook off at first despite it being quite rude. When the food arrived the waitress said nothing to us despite it not being very busy there and placed just two of the plates in front of customers and the other one at the end of the table for us to organise ourselves. We stayed for a very short period and then asked for the bill to leave. They only take cash here most likely in an attempt to take advantage of the tourist trap that is that street. He took our cash and assumed on his own we would want to round up the change as a tip for himself without asking us. It's more accurate to say he told us what our change would be which is just the note and when we were confused by the maths not adding up he shamed us in front of other customers and said that you should tip everywhere. Had we have received a nice service, we would have definitely tipped but getting such rude service in such a short period is beyond ridiculous. It's so unfortunate he could ruin what was such a lovely day, the area is beautiful but the hospitality of this shop is abysmal. You should never assume and take someone's money because you feel it's owed to you and you shouldn't try to fight your customers when we only asked why we hadn't received all our money back in change. For some people who are traveling, having change is important and for such a short period being there mixed with the hostile environment, I would recommend this shop to no one, I'm shocked and appalled by the treatment by that member of staff there. The food was good but I would never pay someone to treat me like...

This was one of the worst restaurant experiences I’ve had. We sat at an empty table as per the instructions written by the cafe door and when the waiter came to take our order we asked for menus as there were none on our table or the tables around us. He huffed, walked away and brought menus back and threw them on the table. After we placed our order the food came out fairly quickly carried by the same waiter who banged down our strudel and 2 drinks and said you need to pay before we had even touched our cutlery. While I was taking out money (as this restaurant is cash only) he told me my total and that the tip wasn’t included I said ok and paid and received my change. I assumed tip was left on the table at the end of the meal since we paid before we had even eaten but the waiter simply stood next to us before swearing at us in German and storming off to clear a table near us. He continued to mutter at us while cleaning the table while banging the plates. He then continued in the same vein while talking to another waiter referring to us in German. We were so shocked by this we didn’t say anything back. We also overhead him saying that tip wasn’t included to the table behind us. The two ladies did tip him while he stood there but evidently it wasn’t enough for him as he stormed past our table loudly exclaiming ‘They have no culture nothing!’ amongst other things. To add to this we were only able to eat one mouthful of the strudel as we were swarmed by wasps. The one bite we managed to eat was soggy...

A very disappointing visit. The cafe was not very busy and it was a baking hot day. There were 2 waiters and whilst the lady was smiling the overall service and the options were very disappointing.

The place is right opposite a tourist attraction and the prices are sky high. The iced latte had no ice and was Luke warn. We had to ask for ice and were reluctantly given some. We ordered several cakes and they tasted bland. We wanted ice cream as the area is infamous for this and it was a hot day. We were told they only have vanilla ice cream. A few minutes later a random local looking man came and a huge ice cream with multiple flavours arrived to his table. Another tourist group came along and asked for ice cream and were again told only vanilla available. They pointed to the man with the varied bowl and were told that they only offer it to certain people which was very odd. So the tourist group left. When we came to pay extortionate price of 60 euros for 4 cakes, 2 water and 2 iced latte we were told they only take cash. Which is a very stupid thing to do as I may not have had cash with me and if that is their odd policy then they should inform ahead of seating guests. Overall the demeanour of the two waiters wasn't great and the quality of the food, options and service is terrible.

Save your money and walk a few mins down the road to an ice cream parlour that sells delicious ice creams to go for less than 2...

Brought here whilst on a Sound of Music tour wherein the guide claims they sell the best coffee and apple strudel. In retrospect felt like it was a tourist trap. Whilst the food was OK, not the best I had but ok, the service was something you'll need to exercise forgiveness. For some reason both ladies seemed like they were ready to bite on anyone who would be so unlucky to go near them. The face was extremely "black". The man behind the counter was much better greeting anyone that stepped in. Then I'm not sure if it's an Austrian thing to having buzzing bees within the section where they display their cakes but they were flying around and landing on the cakes so much so that it really turned me off as a hygiene hazard. I would like say it's OK to just have a drink or cake if the above doesn't bother you but otherwise feel free to wander around and check out the other cafés.

Ended up here due to a recommendation from the Panorama tours "Sound of Music" tour guide. It is in a nice location, next to the church where the wedding took place in the movie. It is also just a nice part of the Mondsee city/town centre. The service was quick and the food delicious. I had hot chocolate, frankfurters with mustard and horseradish with some bread. I knocked off a star due to rude service by the lady, the fact that they don't accept card payments (only place I have ce across in Austria that only accepts cash) and the insane amount of bees in the outdoor seating area (for this reason, I couldn't even try the apple strudel and icecream) though they also have beautiful indoor seating.

While visiting the Basilica of Saint Michael (where the wedding scene from the Sound of Music was filmed), I had read that this was a great place to get traditional apple strudel. We loved sitting outside and taking the beauty of the buildings and listening to the sounds of the church bells while eating our generous sized desserts. One could imagine Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer being seated at the next table while taking a break from filming. Most of us had strudel with warm custard. Our daughter was so surprised with the size of her serving but her dad and brother were more than happy to assist her with finishing it.
