I love going to local markets when abroad as they say a lot about a country’s culture and people. This is not a massive place but colourful with lots of amazing scents all over. Freshly squeezed pomegranate juice, vendors ready to crack walnuts and almonds open for you, fresh fruits and vegetables, I wish I could take home. Honey, tea and spices, great deals if you take your time and chat a little. One thing was missing: among all the fresh meat and produce, there was no place to grab a bite. It would have been a nice addition.

Apart from the - for tourist - gentrified and renovated 'old town', Baku has hardly any historical or even traditional things to offer. Everything around the city center came 'with the oil'. It is all the more gratifying that the Yaşil Bazar is a place where you can - at least - feel a touch of the original. However, I almost went past the unadorned new building without recognizing it as THE market place. Its' a 'must have' for everyone who doesn't want to leave Baku at least without a cultural highlight.

Great for photography. But be careful. We went there from UAE on Sep 2, 2019. Read about the market online. It is a very clean and superbly colorful place filled with dried fruits and fresh produce. You can take gorgeous pics there. The sellers appear to be friendly. Even with their limited English skills, communication is not much of an issue with them. The problem we faced was price and mentality of the sellers. Seeing is a tourists, they charged exorbitant prices. How did we know? We talked to others about the fruits in other places of Baku, and also because we could negotiate with the prices. When a seller agrees to reduce price by 60-70%, you know something is up. Even that we can live with. Tourists are for milking so to speak. But we bought two kg of nuts, and then found out it was 200g short! We bought two small buckets of different berries, and later found out each bucket had thick paddings at the bottom! So actually we were not getting as much fruits as we wanted. Almost like buying a deodorant stick that is actually empty! They sold us two buckets of raspberries that were virtually liquid in the bottom! On the top, the buckets looked like full of nice fruits! So please be careful. Spend money, but watch out for what you are getting. Make sure what you see is EXACTLY what you are getting in the end.

They want ridiculous price even if it is not good season for fruits. They wanted 24AZN for 0.2kg cherry and 8AZN for 0.5kg strawberry... To be honest, it can be very tired place for tourists. You should do research on price before came here. There is no price tag and some merchants are not that kind.. i experienced very unpleasant moment here. Disappointed much We can easily find out the price on google. Tourists are not fool. I hope merchants to be more kind and honest to tourists ;(

It’s a good bazaar with lots of fresh produce/meat/ spices/nuts, some souvenirs, etc. one thing that I suggest is that you should be familiar with prices before you go because once they see foreigners they inflate their prices. Also when I got home and check the produce they had put a few rotten fruits in my bags. If you’re buying produce either ask to pick it yourself or watch them closely to make sure you don’t end up with rotten fruits.

I like those traditional places, were you find country people with traditional goods. The place is nice to visit and for photos. The problem is some workers would walk with you offering their help, you thank them and refuse it politely but they keep following you. Moreover, they usually speak to each other and laugh which is completely unacceptable. My advice, be strict and refuse the help.
