Antwerp is a spectacularly beautiful medieval city on the River Scheldt. The second largest city in Belgium, it has the largest port in the world. In Antwerp, history, art, the diamond trade, architecture, fashion, and centuries-old trades weave an intricate web that make for a memorable visit. Start your trip by exploring the centuries-old Diamond District, then visit old Grote Markt, a beautiful Renaissance square in the Old Town. Don’t miss Rubens House, a 17th-century building housing some of the most precious paintings by Antwerp’s favorite painter son. Stroll through the massive riverside fortress and feel the power at the Cathedral of Our Lady. Enjoy the narrow cobblestoned medieval streets lined up with fashionable boutiques or quaint sidewalk cafes. Take the kids to the Antwerp Zoo, Comic Station, and the petting farm De Schranshoeve, while you taste famous Belgian beers at the Antwerp Brewery. Since its foundation, the park has been controlled by De Koninklijke Maatschappij voor Dierkunde van Antwerpen, a society originally called Société Royale de Zoologie d'Anvers (The Antwerp Royal Society for Zoology). This also became the popular nickname for the zoo, "De Zoologie". The initial objective was to encourage zoological and botanical sciences. Its first director was renowned zoologist and botanist Jacques Kets (10 November 1785 – 1 February 1865). He accepted this position on one condition: a museum had to be built to house his nature-historical collections. This building was inaugurated in 1844 by H.M. King Léopold I. The predicate Royal was added to the name of the society on that occasion. Throughout the years, it has encouraged wildlife preservation through activities and exhibits on a recreational, educational, scientific, and cultural level. In its early years, the size of the park grew from less than 1.59 hectares (3.9 acres) to more than 10.5 hectares (26 acres). Notable buildings from that period are the Egyptian temple (1856) and the antelope building (1861) in Oriental style, which now houses the okapis. The zoo has also a cultural function. Originally, concerts were held in the garden of the zoo. The museum building was demolished to build a concert hall. The hall then became the residence of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, the symphonic orchestra of Flanders. The museum collections were moved to the second floor. For the 1920 Summer Olympics, the venue hosted the boxing and wrestling events. After World War II, the animal park was turned into a model zoo which conformed to new and modern scientific, educational, cultural and aesthetic standards. The animal compounds were enlarged and admitted more light. Buildings from this period include the primate building (1958) and the big jubileum complex, established on the occasion of the 125-year anniversary together with the nocturama (1968), which houses the nocturnal animals. The jubileum complex houses birds of prey and the sea lions. In 1973 a new compound for reptilians was built, and in 1978 a new building for smaller species of monkeys. The older primate building was renovated in 1989. To support its educational mission, the zoo started with group tours and special educational programmes called zoo classes in 1969. Around the same time, planetarium exhibits were installed.

Title: Antwerpen Zoo: A Must-Visit Gem Amongst Zoos As avid travelers and enthusiasts of wildlife, my family and I have had the pleasure of visiting numerous zoos around the world. However, our recent visit to Antwerpen Zoo has left an indelible mark, standing tall as one of the best zoos we have ever encountered. Its unique architectural design, abundant greenery, and the presence of three dedicated parks for children make it a truly exceptional destination. One of the standout features of Antwerpen Zoo is its stunning architecture. The zoo's buildings seamlessly blend old-world charm with modern aesthetics, creating a visually pleasing environment. From the grand entrance to each animal exhibit, every structure showcases intricate details that captivate visitors. This architectural brilliance adds an extra layer of enchantment to the overall experience. The abundance of trees and greenery within the zoo is another aspect that sets it apart. As soon as we stepped inside, we were greeted by a lush oasis that served as a sanctuary for both the animals and visitors. The well-maintained vegetation provided a natural habitat for the animals, making their enclosures feel more authentic and immersive. The verdant surroundings were also a welcome respite, offering shade and a refreshing atmosphere on hot days. What truly impressed us was the thoughtful inclusion of three parks designed exclusively for children. These areas were tailored to engage young minds and bodies, allowing them to learn about nature while having fun. The attention given to creating a space that caters specifically to children sets Antwerpen Zoo apart from other zoos we have visited. Beyond its architectural beauty, lush greenery, and dedicated children's parks, Antwerpen Zoo also boasts an extensive collection of animals from around the world. The enclosures are spacious, well-maintained, and provide ample opportunities for visitors to observe and learn about the animals' natural behaviors. The zoo's commitment to conservation and animal welfare is evident in the care and attention given to the welfare of the animals. In conclusion, Antwerpen Zoo stands as one of the best zoos we have ever visited. Its unique architectural design, abundant greenery, and the inclusion of three parks for children make it a remarkable destination for families. The zoo's commitment to animal welfare and conservation further enhances its appeal. Without a doubt, Antwerpen Zoo is a must-visit gem among zoos and a testament to the wonders of the natural world.

Easy to find. Right beside the Antwerp Central train station. Very spacious zoo with loads of interesting animals and sea creatures. The layout was is fantastic with nice garden landscapes. Myself and friends spent 4hours here and loved it, especially the aquarium and butterfly section. We had a lovely lunch inside a restaurant where the building have one side that was a clear window you can sit by and watch birds nearby. Food was nice and price was reasonable. I recommend to visit this place especially on Mondays where most exhibitions and galleries are closed. The entry ticket for the zoo is €28 but cheaper online if you know when you are going. Toilets here are clean. Gift-shop by the entrance/exit could have a bit more items associated with sea creatures. Very happy to have come and explore this zoo. There is even a few play/cave areas for the kids.

visit - working day during the summer holidays. The ZOO is beautiful, in the very center - easy access by train. Plenty of parking for bikes. Ticket to enter is possilne to buy in automat-perfect ;) I would like to come again, but outside of the summer holidays + early in the morning. The animals were inactive around lunchtime, hidden. I recommend all day for visit and start early morning. Excelent buterflies garden and aquarium hall. Minus: - the zoo is huge for walking and there are few places where can sit down for a coffee. Only one "restaurant in the middle" and one at the end. No cafe/drik place. I recommends taking your own snacks, coffee to the termo-bottle. So big and beautiful aquarium...it was impossible to breathe. adding air conditioning will help. those are my points for improvement. otherwise the most beautiful Zoo so far

The trip was expensive but it is every penny's worth. One of the most complete and comprehensive European zoos with lots of exhibits and animals. The monkey and the gorillas were super fun to watch whilst the birds and other small mammals also attracted quite a decent crowd. There are separate sections for reptiles and also nocturnal animals. Amongst the big mammals there are lions and leapords, along with camels and hippos. The fish house is simply mind blowing as you can find many colourful sea animals. The seals and sea lions were quite a fun to watch and not to mention the fabulous penguins. The flamingos are perhaps one of the major attractions of the park as they roam around freely in an area surrounded by vibrant tulips. There are many eateries inside the zoo with lots of benches to sit and relax.
