Ghent is absolutely breathtaking—like stepping into a living fairy tale. The city’s charm lies in its perfect blend of medieval elegance and vibrant modern energy. Standing on Saint Michael’s Bridge, I was mesmerized by the panoramic view of the town, with its grand gothic towers, picturesque canals, and beautifully preserved historic buildings reflecting on the water.
Every corner of Ghent feels like a postcard, from the stunning Saint Bavo’s Cathedral with its world-famous altarpiece to the fairytale-like Gravensteen Castle, which transports you straight to the Middle Ages. The cobbled streets, charming cafés, and lively squares add to the city’s unique atmosphere, making it both peaceful and full of life.
This is, without a doubt, one of Belgium’s most magical cities—skipping it would be a huge mistake. If you love history, architecture, or simply breathtaking scenery, Ghent is an...
Read moreThe St. Michael's Bridge is a beautiful location in the city centre of Ghent where visitors are afforded lovely views and outstanding photograph opportunities.
The bridge is a three arch structure made of stone. It was erected in the early 20th-century to replace an earlier flat turnable bridge. The centre arch crosses the Leie. Side arches span across footpaths on both sides of the river. There are decorative lampposts on the bridge as well as a nice statue figure of St. Micheal slaying a serpent that is worth stopping by to enjoy.
What is most impressive about this bridge is simply its location. From the centre of the bridge, you can view down the Leie at the beautiful row of guildhalls known as Graslei and Korenlei. To the north and east you will see numerous historic buildings and landmark towers of the Historic Centre of Ghent. The views are really nice here even on poor...
Read moreSt. Michael’s Bridge is one of Ghent’s most scenic and iconic spots. Unlike most bridges that simply connect two sides, this stone arch bridge offers a 360-degree view of Ghent’s historic heart. From the top, you can see the three towers of Ghent—St. Nicholas’ Church, the Belfry, and St. Bavo’s Cathedral—lined up in perfect perspective.
The bridge itself is elegant and historic, often used by photographers and couples for its romantic backdrop. It also offers stunning views of the Graslei and Korenlei, the picturesque quays along the river Lys with their stepped-gable medieval houses.
Tip: Visit during golden hour or at night when the city lights reflect off the water—it’s truly magical.
Verdict: A beautiful, elevated viewpoint and a must-stop photo spot when exploring Ghent’s old town.
