If you are in Belgium for a few days and want to visit somewhere aside from the normal cities, I’d highly recommend this small city just 20 minutes always from Brussels by train. The Library is beautiful and you have the option of paying a little extra and can do the tour up to the bell tower. There you can learn a lot of history about this library and what is has been through. Unfortunately it was really foggy the day we visited so we couldn’t appreciate the sites but I’m sure there would be lovely to see from the top. Staff were very friendly and helpful too.

One of the main squares of Leuven with an iconic art piece (the beetle) by Jan Fabre. One one end you'll find the University Library which is not as old as you might think. It was destroyed in WWI and rebuilt thanks to charity money from universities from all over the US. You can find the names of those contributors on the walls of the Library. The yearly carnival and the weekly market thanked place on the square.

This was an amazing architecture. This is a Leuven University library. Tourist can enter the library to embrace the academic atmosphere. The wooden interior decoration seemed like the library from “Beauty & the Beast”. I really love it. And there was also access to the rooftop of the building. If you don’t mind climbing up about 180 small staircase, you will able to see the top view of Leuven.

Ladeuzeplein is an iconic square in the center of Leuven with a curious statue of an upside down beetle on a needle. It's immediately surrounded by the library, KBC bank, and a lot of cafés and some places to eat. Usually the square is empty and offers a beautiful view of the library, but whenever there's Easter, summer, carnival, or Christmas events, not to mention the weekly Saturday morning markets it becomes full of stalls with activities or things to buy. During days that there aren't any events it's a great place to rest, enjoy the sun, or meet up before heading to the library.

Small tip: there's outlets on the transformer boxes at the edge of the square, and if you're a student/lecturer you can connect to the Eduroam WiFi with your own organization's credentials so you can charge your devices and...
