Palace of the Prince-Bishops — Attraction in Liège

The Palacio de Los Principes-Obispos is the former seat of the Prince-Bishops of Liege. It’s an imposing building dominating the entire northern side of Place St Lambert. The facade is similar to renaissance style. It’s fine to wander around the courtyard and the cloisters, which are still amazing to look at, but it’s not possible to enter the building, but the city had the foresight to provide plaques with information about the building.

I think there are 60 columns supporting the arcade in the courtyard area and each is supposed to be unique. I had a good look at quite a lot of them and could not see any duplication.

A fantastic building, pity it’s not really open...

Het paleis was de voormalige verblijfplaats van de prins - bisschoppen en werd in 1526 heropgebouwd door de prins- bisschop Erard de La Marck. Het gebouw , in een gotische stijl , is opgetrokken rond twee binnenplaatsen. Op de eerste binnenplaats bevinden zich 60 verschillende zuilen die rijkelijk versierd zijn met menselijke figuren en vreemde decors die verwijzen naar de humanistische gedachte en de ontdekking van Amerika. De zuidgevel werd in 1734 vernield door een brand en heropgebouwd onder de heerschappij van Georges- Louis de Berghes , zoals blijkt uit het indrukwekkende embleem .
