Le Perron — Restaurant in Liège

The Le Perron de Liege is a Perron style fountain and one of many installed on the orders of the then Prince-Bishop of Liege. As the name suggests, the fountain contains a sculpture topped with a globus cruciger, a Christian religious symbol that is an orb topped with a cross. The centrepiece of the fountain is a tower modelled on a tower of a church with niches where sculptures of saints are installed.

Coronando la fuente que hace de base del monumento en la Plaza del Mercado, frente al edificio del Ayuntamiento, una columna de mármol simboliza la independencia del Principado de Lieja. Se sabe que existía una fuente en este sitio desde 942. Una primera representación figura en una moneda de la época del Príncipe-Obispo Henri de Leyen (1145-1165). El monumento en su forma actual se construyó en 1305. El Perron, que representa las libertades y los privilegios históricos de los ciudadanos de Lieja, es el símbolo histórico de la ciudad, y por ello figura en el centro de su escudo de armas, en medio de las letras L y G. Durante el corto periodo de diez años esta columna fue quitada de su pedestal y trasladada a la ciudad de Brujas por Carlos el Temerario, en 1468. A la muerte de éste, el Príncipe Obispo Louis de Bourbon consiguió el retorno a Lieja del Perron, que fue recibido por la ciudad y colocado de nuevo sobre su pedestal, haciendo grabar la siguiente inscripción: « LE PERRON QUE LIEGE REGARDE AVEC ORGUEIL COMME L'EMBLEME SACRE DE LA PATRIE FUT REPLACE SUR CE PIEDESTAL LE 10 JUILLET 1478.
