While I find the Royal Dockyards to be pretty bland and touristy and not so exciting.....this place is GREAT. Walked right up and paid my $18 on credit card, was given a map, and then off I went to some of the most amazing views in Bermuda, pretty fort grounds and cannons, beautiful old buildings, great exhibits on the history of the island, some free takeaway books on Bermuda, fun views of the local dolphins (having to work for tourists unfortunately), and an incredible mural that was quite a great work of art. I am a quick walker and probably spent 3 hours for my visit, and most of the time I felt like I was there by myself as very few people there (you are missing out folks!). A few small complaints detract from what would have otherwise been an enthusiastic 5-star review. First, I never saw any staff anywhere after I paid - glad I didn't have any questions about anything. Secondly, many of the museum exhibits (ex. watercolor paintings) are located in the Commissioner's House.....but when you get there and start walking through, many of the rooms with exhibits are CLOSED. There wasn't a notice of this at the entrance before I paid, and I couldn't find mention of closed exhibits on their website either. I would still have gladly paid and still think this museum is a great value for everything that is open.....but not cool. Overall - don't miss this place folks, if not just for the views from the Commissioner House, the Graham Foster mural, and the Queen Elizabeth room helping to...
Read moreSet within the fort in The Keep at the Royal Naval Dockyard and encompassing the beautifully restored 19th-century Commissioner's House, the National Museum of Bermuda has a mighty collection of artifacts and exhibits that delve into Bermuda's maritime history. Built to guard the entire naval base, the fort features seven bastions and ramparts. Visitors can learn about shipwrecks, battles, and more in eight historic exhibit buildings.
The Commissioner's house, the oldest cast iron frame residential building in the Western Hemisphere, transports you back in time with authentic period furniture and exhibits on the island's military past. Don't miss the incredible Hall of History mural, created by the Bermudian artist Graham Foster, that takes up all four walls of a room in the house. Grab a bite to eat and enjoy it on the wraparound veranda, taking in the panoramic views of the island and the Atlantic ocean. The best part--the adorable sheep grazing...
Read moreThe National Museum of Bermuda is a great start for the whole family when visiting the island. The grounds are beautiful with spectacular views of the port. Just after the entrance is the dolphin experience which is wonderful to watch and unforgettable to participate. The staff are really friendly and knowledgeable and give you up close and enjoyable interaction with the dolphins. Next to the dolphin experience is a very cool playground with a giant slide for kids, and an air conditioned play space if the sun is making little ones (or adults) cranky. The boat loft has educational display on the island's energy system with tons of great history from the electric company. Climbing the hill the fortifications are great hands-on history for everyone, followed by the restored commissioner's house which is really impressive and filled with rich information. The view from the second floor balcony...
