Very big metal statue of a thunderbird called Spirit Catcher donated in 1986. Created by Artist Ron Baird. Looks rustic. Parking is available right beside the statue but it is not free. We came in the winter months and the path is not clear so you have to climb over snowbanks if you want to get closer to the plaques to read information about the art installation. It’s a good 5 min break or for a quick drive by as a point of interest if you happen to be in the area.

When in Barrie, you must visit The Spirit Catcher. First, it is hard to miss. It was designed by sculptor Ron Baird for the 1986 EXPO in Vancouver and is influenced by Indigenous traditions. Its structure stands at Barrie's waterfront and is a magnificent and compelling piece of art. Have you visited The Spirit Catcher? #barrie #sculptor #art #local #explorelocal #ontario

The Spirit of Barrie! I absolutely love taking walks by the Spirit Catcher. It embodies Barrie's festive spirit, sense of community, beauty, nature, and lifestyle. Also, it is conveniently located across from Barrie's downtown core - which allows for tourists to take in beautiful scenic views and indulge in a little bit of shopping. Definitely worth the trip!

This is a large kinetic sculpture made with an image of a Thunderbird, carrying people's dreams and desires to the Creator. The wings are shaped as sharp blades that move with the wind. The sculpture is both interesting and mythical to behold. When I visited last weekend, the sculpture was decorated with children's shoes and toys, as a memorial to the children lost in former residential school. It was a dark page in Canadian history and around the world where young and the vulnerable were victims of racial injustice. Let's do our part and don't let history...

Absolutely beautiful location for tourists. It lets you see the down-town core at your back, and the Kempenfelt bay in front straight across to minets point (where you can take your kids to the park and get some ice-cream from a tiny little local shop on the left while driving into the kids-park.

This spot is host to quite a few community events over the summer months and tends to attract a wide array of crowds depending on time of day / season.

Check it out if you haven't! This spots...
