This is the only authentic Korean spa I know of on the lower mainland and it is a very good one. I feel that the experience will depend on when you decide to go. First, it is a large space but it can get crowded really fast because there are limited places where you can relax without being in each other's personal spaces. After all, most people who visit are naked. In that regard, I have to emphasize that each gender is segregated, so in busy times, you will be very close to another another person in their birthday suit. I went when it wasn't busy so I had lots of time by myself. I would not enjoy this spa in rush hour.
As soon as you enter the changeroom, you will have access to your gender's hot tub, dry sauna, steam room, cold tub, shower and salt room. If you want to mingle with your partner, you will have to exit into the lobby to access the co-ed charcoal, earth and ice rooms. You will have to wear the issued JJ shirt and shorts in these co-ed rooms.
In regards to the nudity, it is truly liberating. I go to the spa to let go of all my worries, empty my mind and focus on my breathing. With no clothes, I get to be more in tune with myself. It didn't take long for the akwardness to go away. After all, there really are no places to hang your towels or clothes in the spa.
The perfect spa for me would be the child of the Scandinavian and the JJ Family Spa Plus. What's missing from the JJ is the connection to nature. If I could be totally naked at the Scandinavian Spa, it would be the perfect spa: time for yourself, the smell and sounds of nature, and water all around. I addition, I didn't like that all footwear, including slippers, are prohibited in the changeroom. This is a huge hygiene issue, especially after I have showered at the end. Do they expect me to walk my clean feet all over the washroom and lobby floor before putting my shoes back on? Gross.
Some reviewers commented that this spa was on the middle go no where. It is situated a few blocks from the massive Coquitlam Mall and the various mega...
Read moreI was at this place and was warned that it’s not up to date with their style and condition of this place . They were not lying . It NEEDS an upgrade ASAP. As I entered I greeted the front desk lady with absolutely no smile or friendless . Looked like I’m at a principals office or something . It was my first time and not knowing what to do and where to go I got a very vague info about changing my clothes and going to the hot tub. I had to pay upfront .She asked with I had scrubbing gloves I ashowed her mine but she was not happy with them and said she’s not sure they’re good enough and I have to buy theirs which was extra $6 .I was handed few towels and a pair of shorts and a shirt . I thought inside there must be someone who will explain but nope, and other clients I asked they were all there for the first time as well and all clueless. I put on my bathing suit cause their outfit didn’t make any sense to me whatsoever. Went to the hot tub then called for the scrub. The scrub was good , got lucky with Min who was really good others not so lucky and not happy with the service and the scrub . I think not knowing much English makes it difficult to communicate but hey they could be here maybe since very recent and I can’t judge by that . But she was putting an effort to understand and explain. Going into the different baths and other rooms I really didn’t feel like walking without my slippers , thank his I took them with me . All the tiles and all fixtures so old and unsightly. I felt like I’m in a community bath of a 3rd world country and not in Canada . So be aware if you go there don’t have too many expectations. I think it’ll get better the second time cause I know now what I’m expecting and no surprises. Will I go there again ? Most probably yes cause this is the only facility that offers Korean style scrubbing in the lower mainland. And with a few upgrades it’ll be a great facility but first and foremost please change that attitude and be more friendlier and...
Read moreThis is a wonderful spa! I was impressed by its cleanliness and service. Staff were very nice. The price is also affordable at a $25 entrance fee.
For those who may be confused at how to use the facility, here is how:
You go to the gendered area’s changing room and put you belongings in a locker. They give you a lock key, two towels, and a uniform to wear in a dry area.
You can either go fully naked or wear a swimsuit. Take a shower in their shower area.
Use the “wet” facilities: a hot tub, an ice tub, a steam sauna, and a dry sauna. All of these facilities are in the gendered area. You can put on slippers here if you don’t want to be barefoot.
If you want, you can also get special services (e.g., acupuncture, massage, etc.) for an additional price. I can’t speak much about this because I didn’t use these services.
Take a shower and wear the uniform to use the dry areas. There is a salt room in the gendered area. There is a yellow room, a coal room, and an ice room in the co-ed area. You cannot wear slippers in the dry area, but you can put on your socks.
You have 3 hours to use the facilities. They also provide free water to drink. If you get hungry, you can buy food in JJ Cafe that serves Korean snack and food.
Both the spa and the cafe are shoe-less places, but they provide you a secure place to store the shoes. I recommend you bring your own swimsuit (optional), slippers, and toiletries for taking a shower.
Overall, it was a great experience, and I felt so relaxed and warm! I am happy to have discovered this place, and I will definitely come back again. It’s a true gem to have a...
