Our trip to Dynamic Earth was highly disappointing. We were travelling to Northern Ontario (Timmins) and really wanted to get a "mining" experience. Unfortunately the Gold Mine tour in Timmins is now closed so we found Dynamic Earth and figured we would stop in on our way back to Toronto.
We were on their website several times and even called. I wanted to know when the underground tours were and was told "we close at 4". I finally got it out of her that their last underground tour was at 3pm but she was not forthcoming with this.
On our way back, we arrived before 1, thinking we would be good to go underground and get back on the road by 3pm. The place was empty. We were told that we couldn't take the tour for another 2 hours because we didn't speak French and they were only doing French tours until then. I found out there were only 2 people registered on the French tour so we asked if it was possible to do a bilingual tour. They were not willing to accommodate.
There is nothing telling you when the tours run, which times are French so visitors can plan their visits accordingly. We detoured to this site on purpose thinking we would have loads of time.
When we spoke to a manager (clearly annoyed that we interrupted her lunch break) and she told us that we didn't plan our visit very well and if we just paid the entrance fee ($20+) we could watch videos on the history of Sudbury for 2 hours until they could take us on an English tour. I'm not sure on how we were to plan differently when their website tells you nothing about tour times, and when we call they don't offer that information either.
Overall a huge waste of time. They are government funded, which doesn't shock me at all regarding the level of service and overall common sense of providing valuable information to potential customers. I also found out that this was never a working mine...not a deal breaker, but not as cool as the Timmins tour...
Read moreHad a great time here with my family. The kids (and their parents) had a great time geeking out with all the rocks and minerals around. There are lots of great play areas for kids 12 and under, including an outdoor play park. My younger kids mostly stayed in the lower level's climbing structure and had a lot of fun being miners with other kids. There are also activities that you can do (like a scavenger hunt) to get points, and those points can be used to choose a rock to take home for free. The mine tour was a lot of fun and has changed a lot since I last visited when I was a kid. Great information, and Addison was a great tour guide with knowledgeable answers and patience for curious kids. One piece of advice to consider when you're planning your trip is to be aware that everything is labelled "Science North" - even though you're booking admission and an underground tour at Dynamic Earth. The tickets you book for the mining tour are from "Science North" and have the Science North address on it without indicating that the tour is located at a different venue (no other address is provided). I imagine it could be confusing for people who aren't familiar with how things are set up. You must buy admission to Dynamic Earth, and then the Underground tour is an...
Read moreMy husband and I were so excited for this experience. We went to purchase tickets and the woman spoke so fast that I hardly understood what she said and my husband who’s English is not his first language did not understand a word at all. We were also charged for parking and the gates were open. We had the map and walked around very confused and right away felt out of place. We walked into the Discovery Room which was on the map and it was empty. A staff member then walked in and rudely said “can I help you?.” We said we were following the map and she ushered us out and again very rudely said that the room was for students and slammed the door behind us. We were really taken aback We then went into the minerals room and there were staff setting up for something. They did not acknowledge us at all. We felt so unwelcome, like we were doing something wrong… We were so confused. We left in under an hour and paid over $50.00. We didn’t even bother with the underground mine experience. My father was a miner and it would have been nice to see, but this was all to disheartening. I wouldn’t recommend this place if you don’t have any kids. This whole experience was...
