FoodyMart supermarket — Attraction in Markham

I used to come to this supermarket weekly when they newly opened years ago. They were always packed and it was very difficult to find a parking spot. I found their service and quality of food starting to get worse when they started to have more and more customers. So I stopped going because there are a lot of other Asian groceries stores open in the area.

In the last few months, I noticed they were not as busy as before. After we haven't been to this supermarket for awhile, we decide to go back to give it a try.

Like most of the Asian groceries stores, they have a great variety of vegetables and fruits. They have a special small corner with Japan import products.

We like how they itemize the frozen products ~ neat and tidy. Some items are not able to be found in other stores.

We tried the Durian products today. The durian ice bar has a lot of shredded coconut and not much durian taste. For $2.99 a pack with 6 bar, no harm to try if you don't mind having coconut in your Durian bar. The Durian pulp is very good. It is $17.99 a pack. It tastes so sweet and strong. It's a pretty decent place for a Chinese supermarket. It's usually well stocked with lots of choices and options. They take credit card which is nice. I believe they also take Ali pay and Wechat pay.

Update: May 2022 Just found these cute cans of sparkling water! If it's soda I might get it... Still thinking of getting it to collect the cans. :)

Update: Nov 2023 you need to bring your own reusable bags now. Still enjoy shopping here for the variety of things available, fresh produce and cooked, ready to eat items.

Update Apr 2024: the store has maintained its standard. Good variety and quality produce. Seafood, meats, cooked foods, sushi, BBQ area. Lots of workers and it's still pretty clean.

Update July 2024: Came on a Saturday and there were some taste test stations. The cooked foods section was already full of prepped foods but some of the BBQ station was still being prepared. But the BBQ pork was ready and the lady serving was very friendly. Good selection of fruits for the summer. Prices for the snacks are definitely higher but it may be the supplier...

I went shopping here around 8:40 pm with my pregnant friend (the store closes at 10 pm). I bought two bubble teas from Coco inside the supermarket and put them on the edge of the checkout conveyor belt while waiting in line. When the belt moved, one cup fell off, shattered on the ground, and spilled everywhere – including on me.

We were just standing there holding the broken cup for quite a while. No one cared to check on us. After a few minutes, the cashier came over, looked at us with a disgusted face, and only gave me paper towels when I asked. She even told us – two pregnant customers – to clean the floor ourselves, without any intention to call for cleaning staff.

A male cleaner passed by and kindly helped us wipe it up, but the cashier said to him, right in front of us, “You’re almost off work and they still give you trouble.”

This was extremely disrespectful and disappointing service. I never expected a big supermarket like this to treat pregnant customers like an inconvenience rather than...
