Probably my least favourite park in Montreal, but its the one right by my door, ahah.
Very big, lots of space for activities, well located and services an enormous amount of people.
However, it is a very sparse park. Compare the satellite image of Jarry park to Parc La Fontaine (and almost any other park) - and you'll see a huge difference in tree cover. There's not a lot of trees, and so not a lot of shade, and very little pockets of seclusion. Most of the interesting horticulture and landscaping is located just around the lake, and everything else feels very bare. It would be nice if they could actually plant native plants all around the park.
There are also relatively few places to sit - more lounge-like seating and picnic tables would be amazing.
There are also no real toilets, just porta-potties. Ew.
Its also a very noisy park. Would be nice if we could get more tree cover and bushes or something, or build a noise barrier to block the sounds of trucks and honking from St Laurent and Jarry that just kind of echo around the whole park.
I don't consider Jarry park to be 'nature' in the heart of the city, thanks to the the sparse greenery and heavy noise pollution. If you are looking for greenery and peace and quiet, there are far...
Read moreWalking distance from jean talon market and some great takeout restaurants, (may I recommend the soft serve ice cream on the corner of St Dominique and Mozart?) At sunset you can find people sitting on the hill above the fountain, eating and watching the sun go down over the industrial buildings of Parc X and immense Willow trees.
At night the pond is well lit and the many benches make a great place for a late night conversation, masked by the sound of the glowing fountain.
In the winter it’s my favorite place for an afternoon skate. There are tons of good coffee shops to warm up in afterwards. (st henri is hidden in a back street towards the commuter train. Or walk to umami,a vegan ramen spot that will warm your bones and worth the ten minute walk.)
If you are looking for the ideal birthday picnic spot make sure you get to the man made island in the reeds early. And if you feed the ducks they will never leave you alone.
There’s a dog park. A décent pool. A kids pool. The playground past the skatepark comes highly recommended from a five and a nine year old I know.
Huge open spaces to play ball and plenty of shady spots to read. Bring your own grill or enjoy the...
Read moreI lived my youth around there and my Grandma used to bring me to the Expos games. I was very young but she taught me everything about baseball lol. Then in 3rd grade, our teacher brought us to a game. Then in High School I'd gather up with the guys cause I was now playing baseball with them and go often to see the Expos in the bleachers for $0.50 lol. I had my children around there still and brought them in the playground, we had 2 skating rinks 1 for hockey and 1 for free skating which I skated with my 2 sons and in the summer they played baseball and after we'd go swim in the small pool and growing up and go to the big pool. I have so many good memories. I even remember when my granddaddy brought me at the park, I was about 5 years old and taught me to fly a quite several times and go on the swings and pushed me, just as I did with my kids. My parents still live around there. It's been 58 years. And only good things happened. Specially to go and see several concerts. Genesis, Elton John, I think Supertramp and so many others. And of course Tennis became one of the biggest event. Just awesome...
