This museum was bigger on the inside than how it looked on the outside. I had never been in it before and assumed it would just be another tiny museum with a bunch of first nations artifacts, which are still cool. But in a museum I like seeing a variety of displays and this museum had just that. I paid a toonie to get in, loved the displays including a coal mine replica you can walk through. The staff is super friendly and welcome you right in. The day I went the nanaimo Clippers were there for a meet and greet. I got autographs and coloured with them. They interacted with everyone. People could get their pictures taken with them while wearing hockey gear. Free popcorn was given. And a wheel is spun to win swag. Staff quite friendly and very helpful. Displays are varied and decent although at times a little unplanned out. Mutliple generation gaps between images right beside each other so occassionally confusing.
Chinatown display is decent. As are others. Large Indigenous display by the Whites which is very well done.

Park at Swylana for free and walk if possible. Its a...
Read moreLocated in the heart of downtown, this place is 1 min away from the Courtyard by Marriott. The museum is smaller compared to other museums you must have visited, but it definitely packs a punch. It is very well maintained. Staff is friendly too. Entry is by donation only, you are free to pay any amount. Gift shop is also interesting, lots of stuff to choose from. The products I noticed are sold at a dollar or 2 more compared to regular shops. The museum has a lot of historic displays and portrays indigenous culture. There is also a coal mine exhibit, which is pretty much like a real mine. It's great for kids, too. Overall, this museum hosts informative and interactive exhibits that tell the story of Nanaimo's history....
