I have been at Queen's University for 5 years both as a BFAH undergrad, and an MA student in Cultural studies. I have always had interest in the gallery as space for emerging artists and seasoned artists alike to connect and form a 'union' (pun intended) of creation and passion for the arts. For the longest time, I was someone on the outside who walked into the gallery to see a new installation, visit for class, speak with the director of the gallery, or just walk past with the comfort of knowing what the gallery stood for. It had been the most attainable and welcoming entrance into the world I so desired to be a part of, but my shyness and panic towards not fitting the mould that this world dictated became paralyzing. Finally, my urge to be a part of something more, a member of this amazing community, overshadowed my fear. I made my own place in the world I wanted to be a part of, and I sent an email. A simple email which led to the Union Gallery welcoming me with open arms. I joined the game late, but I am so happy I joined at all. I wish I had done this sooner. The cozy reception desk and the flat storage cabinets in the project room were the exact spaces I needed in a time where my creation was falling short. I needed the physical presence inside a space of growth, change, and art in order to kickstart my own mind once again. I am grateful for the Union and hope others will feel the same way in future. Perhaps with a little less fear, and a little more confidence. To the end of an era, but a lifetime of creation. Cheers!
