LOCATION & ADDRESS

The Old Windmill / Le Vieux Moulin de Pointe Claire, is located in the picturesque Pointe-Claire Village area, on Rue Saint-Joachim near its intersection with Lakeshore Road (Chemin du Bord-du-Lac–Lakeshore).

Address:

1 Rue Saint-Joachim Pointe-Claire, QC Canada H9S 4M8

THE FOUNDERS: THE SULPICIANS

The windmill was built by the Sulpicians, officially known as the Society of Priests of Saint Sulpice. They were a Catholic teaching order who originated in France in the 17th century.

In New France (Quebec), they were granted the Seigneurie de l'Île-de-Montréal in 1663. As the feudal lords, or "Seigneurs of Montreal," the Sulpicians oversaw the development and administration of the territory, which included setting up parishes, attracting settlers, and building essential infrastructure like roads, churches, and, in this case, the mill required to process the settlers' grain.

EASY ACCESS AND FREE PARKING

The historical Pointe-Claire Windmill is exceptionally easy to find. It is conveniently situated just off Lakeshore Road, which offers a beautiful, scenic drive along the edge of Lake St. Louis. For visitors, a major advantage is the availability of free parking, making it simple and hassle-free to stop and admire this iconic landmark.

UNDER RESTORATION

It is important to note that the windmill is currently undergoing a full restoration to ensure its complete structural recovery and long-term preservation. Despite the ongoing work, the setting remains very peaceful and beautiful by the lake, making it a wonderful spot for a quick stop and photography.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE TIMELINE

• 1710: The windmill was built by the Sulpicians to serve the first settlers as a vital economic and defensive structure. • 1983: The structure was officially classified as a heritage building by the Quebec government. • February 26, 2025: A significant development occurred when a 50-year lease was secured by a local heritage society. • The Vision: This lease enables the group to fully fund and complete the restoration, with the ultimate goal of transforming the mill into a "Living History Interpretation Centre" to share its 300-year legacy with the public.

SUMMARY

A beautiful and easily accessible historical landmark, built in 1710 by the Seigneurs of Montreal (the Sulpicians). As one of the last French Regime windmills in Quebec, it is an invaluable piece of history. While the mill is currently undergoing full restoration to transform it into a future Living History Interpretation Centre, the peaceful lakeside setting is definitely worth a visit, especially with the convenience of free parking.

I made it just in time to witness the sunset as the sun slowly disappears into the horizon. Just marvelous to see it from here! Driving here was as one way easy as it gets, plenty of parking spots too, although 1 hour parking only, which is more than enough to explore around! There is just one more thing about the sound and the sighting of the shore at this time of the year that makes it even more special! Leaves me curious to revisit when weather is warm again!

Blessing this place with Kimmidoll Sayaka's beauty & purity and notes going to fumo Aya's fumo...

Loved this spot. Came here during sunrise, such a beautiful spot to catch a peaceful sunrise located by the waterfront with soft hues of pink, orange, and gold painting the sky. The windmill itself adds a historical touch, standing proudly against the backdrop of the changing sky. There are often few people around at this time of day because of school nearby.Highly recommended for anyone seeking a quiet, picturesque spot to greet the day.
