I went to Forest Valley today with my daughter as a volunteer for her class. The guides name was Rich and he was one of the best guides I have ever seen. He was so soft spoken and yet commanded respect without having to raise his voice at all.
Rich embodied the TDSB values and continued to instill and repeat the ideal of "fairness" which is this months character trait. I was very impressed with the way that he taught through story telling and his way of repeating and reviewing the important information so that the children learned the material; appreciated the hands on learning; all while having some fun. Rich's way of teaching built up manners for the children which made the volunteers experience easier and he made some subtle appropriate jokes so that the adults would enjoy their time as well.
The facility was excellent for outdoor learning and it seemed like the staff took good consideration to teachers, students and volunteers when creating their curriculum, timing/schedules and layout of the buildings and eating areas. The day ended with a fun tubing activity and some maple syrup tasting. For an educational trip that taught about the First Nations people and first settlers, what better way to end the day with fun and sweets. If all the guides at Forrest Valley are like Rich, then I highly recommend a family tour or school tour at Forrest Valley Outdoor Education Center.
Meegwtch Rich and Forrest Valley!
