Another large park in Strathcona. This one has several fields, a couple tennis courts, a playground, a skate park, washroom with homeless people, and a covered area. There is also a community garden on the west side. This unique park offers much to its visitors, from skatepark and climbing wall (both added during park restorations in 2004), to community gardens and sports fields. The heart of the park is a charming place to rest or play, while the community gardens and pathways that line the perimeter make for a pleasant stroll.
Originally known as False Creek Park (it was situated on what was called False Creek Flats) this site had been the city dump whose horrible smell called for its close in 1939. It was covered in with fill from city owned lots in the Hastings East area. The park was finally seeded in 1947 with drainage, trees and shrubs following the next year.
In 1976 a link was created between False Creek Park and MacLean Park – it was named Strathcona Linear Park and False Creek Park was changed to Strathcona Park, named for the surrounding neighbourhood.
The Strathcona neighbourhood takes its name from Lord Strathcona, formerly Sir Donald A. Smith, who drove the last spike completing the first transcontinental railway at Craigellachie, British Columbia. He later became Canadian High...
Read moreI love this park! It's a perfect blend of green grass, and playground areas, ideal for sporting events, kids, or just chilling out and enjoying the unique beauty of East Van. There's also a generous area bordering the park that's dedicated to roughly 150 ish small community garden plots (but at at $10 annually they're generally not readily available). Hidden back near the aforementioned individually tended gardens, there is an orchard, a little mushroom garden, some locally crafted, quaint picnicking type tables and stools, seasonal ponds, composting/manure zones, seasonal access to irrigation, tiny greenhouses and garden tool sheds....among other features I am quite sure!
Locals recently battled City planners in order to salvage this beautiful, coveted space from the 'development' of a commuter road designated to slice directly through the park. Thanks to those dedicated souls, the 'development' proposal was denied. This place is undeniably one of East Van's best kept, buried treasures. There's no way you won't fall in love with this secret garden. So, please! let's...
Read moreAmenities= Two public gardens. Maybe more depending on how you quantify gardens, it could be in the thousands if you count species, genus, other crapperjax and razmatazz. The bathrooms are open sometimes. A skate park with lots of low options, a hip, reasonable rails, transitions, sloped box. Which is adjacent to a quantity of basketballness, balls are not provided, bring your own. Slightly further south you will find a gazebo like structure with seating for up to 69 if you try hard enough. An ample playground including climbing, sliding and swinging aparatus for several ages. Some racket fuzz ball arenas will great you with the sarcastic pantamime of Julius Caesar declaring the demise of a gladiator with the tip of his thumb nail. If you like breaking your sternum tall bike jousting on acid, this might just be the park for...
