A classic neighbourhood grocer whom everyone knows each other. They carry a good selection of items. In the back of the store is where you will find delicious sandwiches and an assortment of deli meats & food. I had the ‘Prosciutto Italiano’ sandwich consisting of prosciutto, provolone, tomato, onion with a choice of Italian white or whole wheat bread or un. You have a choice of regular or Dijon mustard, mayo, or chipotle mayo. The prosciutto was sliced to paper thin thickness without too much condiment on it. The whole wheat bun was fresh and not too hard. At the price of $8.75 plus tax, you just get a sandwich. Off to the side of the store, there’s a coffee grinder so you can grind your own coffee. There’s a good selection of Italian products. Located on Union Street they are only a couple blocks from Chinatown. A great neighbourhood store serving the local community.

Quant little corner store/market/deli that's been open for 106 years! Located on Union Street between Clark and Chinatown, so right on the main bike route. Good place to stop for a bite on the ride down or back from the West side of town. They have tons of imported dry and canned goods crammed into a small store, as well as the usual corner store staples. Deli in the back has selection of cold cuts, cheeses, prepared savoury treats, as well as a small menu for sandwiches. We got a pastrami and a "Prosciutto "Italiano". Pretty decent sandwiches, maybe a little on the small side, but they are only about $9 each.

A trip to Strathcona is never complete without a trip to Benny’s Market. Janet, behind the counter, is super friendly & welcoming. Sandwiches and pastries are always amazingly tasty. You HAVE to try their Crème Brûlée Croissants. But get there early; they sell out fast. This gem of a corner grocery store have been on the same corner for more than 100 years. 💪💪

It's not a popular opinion but I don't care if it's a 100 year old family business. I hate Benny's Foods.

I have been going here for the 6 years I have lived in the neighborhood. Finally, this week, they actually acted friendly to me and asked me if I lived in the area. I have been coming here for 6 years! Same 2 people always at the cash register. Happily chit chatting with customers. But when I try to make friendly chit chat, I am met with what feels like hostility. I noticed from the get go that they didn't treat me the same as other customers. Yet they pride themselves on being a family business, and part of the community. But they don't treat the community all the same, that's for sure. Last year, I got a lecture when I needed a bag 5 cent bag for my $25 purchase. After spending who knows how much money at this store, I decided to try a Too Good To Go box. It was awful! Literally rotten fruit that was inedible. I saw all the boxes waiting to be picked up and what people before me were getting. They were getting good stuff. Then when it was my turn, the lady didn't give me one of the pre-prepared boxes and literally grabbed rotten produce and gave it to me. I decided to give it one more try and still the same, except it was much smaller than the first time. I threw the entire thing away both times because it was inedible. It's over priced, and there are lots of places that sell similar stuff at better quality and prices. The products they carry aren't hard to find or all that special. After spending a lot of money here over the years, I plan to go elsewhere, where they...

Their salami was OK it was like $5 for a 100 grams and the lady at the deli gave me attitude and told me “100 grams minimum” I’m like sure that’s fine, I walk over to the register to pay, as I’m walking over with my salami I get yelled at by this older white dude who worked there “you gonna pay for that??” And gives me a filthy stare for like 11 seconds as I’m literally waiting in line to pay for what I got, after he stared at me he seem to of noticed I wasn’t gonna steal some $5 deli meat, he just walked into the back, me and my friend found that whole interaction insane, at the time the store was packed but the one black person in the store (Me) gets that disrespectful and hostile comment the cashier was very nice, just that interaction is insane to me as it’s hailed as this “friendly family owned business” I guess that only applies to customers that look a...
