It's not a popular opinion but I don't care if it's a 100 year old family business. I hate Benny's Foods.
I have been going here for the 6 years I have lived in the neighborhood. Finally, this week, they actually acted friendly to me and asked me if I lived in the area. I have been coming here for 6 years! Same 2 people always at the cash register. Happily chit chatting with customers. But when I try to make friendly chit chat, I am met with what feels like hostility. I noticed from the get go that they didn't treat me the same as other customers. Yet they pride themselves on being a family business, and part of the community. But they don't treat the community all the same, that's for sure. Last year, I got a lecture when I needed a bag 5 cent bag for my $25 purchase. After spending who knows how much money at this store, I decided to try a Too Good To Go box. It was awful! Literally rotten fruit that was inedible. I saw all the boxes waiting to be picked up and what people before me were getting. They were getting good stuff. Then when it was my turn, the lady didn't give me one of the pre-prepared boxes and literally grabbed rotten produce and gave it to me. I decided to give it one more try and still the same, except it was much smaller than the first time. I threw the entire thing away both times because it was inedible. It's over priced, and there are lots of places that sell similar stuff at better quality and prices. The products they carry aren't hard to find or all that special. After spending a lot of money here over the years, I plan to go elsewhere, where they...
Read moreTheir salami was OK it was like $5 for a 100 grams and the lady at the deli gave me attitude and told me â100 grams minimumâ Iâm like sure thatâs fine, I walk over to the register to pay, as Iâm walking over with my salami I get yelled at by this older white dude who worked there âyou gonna pay for that??â And gives me a filthy stare for like 11 seconds as Iâm literally waiting in line to pay for what I got, after he stared at me he seem to of noticed I wasnât gonna steal some $5 deli meat, he just walked into the back, me and my friend found that whole interaction insane, at the time the store was packed but the one black person in the store (Me) gets that disrespectful and hostile comment the cashier was very nice, just that interaction is insane to me as itâs hailed as this âfriendly family owned businessâ I guess that only applies to customers that look a...
Read moreA classic neighbourhood grocer whom everyone knows each other. They carry a good selection of items. In the back of the store is where you will find delicious sandwiches and an assortment of deli meats & food. I had the âProsciutto Italianoâ sandwich consisting of prosciutto, provolone, tomato, onion with a choice of Italian white or whole wheat bread or un. You have a choice of regular or Dijon mustard, mayo, or chipotle mayo. The prosciutto was sliced to paper thin thickness without too much condiment on it. The whole wheat bun was fresh and not too hard. At the price of $8.75 plus tax, you just get a sandwich.
Off to the side of the store, thereâs a coffee grinder so you can grind your own coffee. Thereâs a good selection of Italian products. Located on Union Street they are only a couple blocks from Chinatown. A great neighbourhood store serving the...
