Shamian is an interesting little place. It's not much more than a sandbar in the river, you can walk around the entire thing in less than 15 minutes. But it is a contrasting blend of Western and Chinese architecture. During the Qing Dynasty, the Chinese disliked and feared Westerners, and when they wanted to establish embassies, the Chinese gave them this area, then cut a canal to separate it from the mainland. It's a very popular place to get married, you'll almost always see wedding parties every day. It was famous (infamous) as the headquarters for Chinese baby adoptions, this is where foreigners went to adopt. There used to be lots of embassies here, but now the only one left is the Polish embassy, although the US Consulate General building is still there. Most of the buildings have been converted to condos now, but they've maintained the old style architecture. If you're in Guangzhou, it's worth a day trip to see it. And if you go, and love dim sum, you're close to a very famous dim sum restaurant called Pan Xi, about a 15 minute taxi ride from the island. (A few of the photos are of the famous walking street right across the bridge from...
