PURE Jungle Spa — Attraction in Cahuita

I will start by saying that the massages we got were great but the experience was unfortunate and not great. We first tried to schedule massages in advance of arriving In Puerto Viejo with them via WhatsApp but they were not very responsive so we decided to come in person to book them as soon as we got here. We waited to book our other tours and plans until we set up the massages. They scheduled us for massages and body treatments for 12:30 PM the next day and we made all of our plans for our time in PV around the appointment. We showed up early for our appointment and the woman who had booked it for us the previous day completely forgot about it and was so apologetic. She asked if we had any availability the next day and we had a tour that was supposed to end at 2 PM so we scheduled it for 3 PM but said that tours we’ve done have gone over so we were uncertain we would make it by 3. She said not a problem and that she would see us the next day as well as give a big discount on our treatments as an apology. She made it seem like she understood that we may be late and that they could be flexible. Our tour ran over and we actually had to end it early for the whole group to make it to this massage appointment. We got there 30 minutes late and they said sorry they will only be able to do our massages and skip our body treatments. We were disappointed but understood that they had other appointments booked. After our massages we went to pay and they charged us the full price for the massages but didn’t charge us for the time that we were late. This was my 3rd (and 4th) time visiting pure jungle. I first came here in 2014 and then 2016. The spa has stayed pretty much the same, which is amazing because I remembered how much I loved it back then, and still love it now after all these years. Some things should never change because they're perfect just the way they are. I had a couples treatment in 2016 and again in 2025 and both were equally amazing. The warm cacao paste lathered all over our skin felt wonderful. and smelled divine. Cacao is so sacred - to have your body covered in it is pure magic. We got a 1.5 hr body treatment and a 1hr facial and it was an amazing price for the quality of the experience. Our therapists were amazing - mine got into every part of my body that was bothering me without me having to tell her anything. She was highly intuitive and very skilled - better than therapists I've had in Canada, in fact. I was so impressed with the couples treatment that I returned a couple days later for another massage - this time with a different therapist and for the bamboo stick massage. One word: WOW; the warm bamboo sticks were unlike any massage I've ever had and helped my body relax in ways it never has. I can't say enough about this spa - everything from the moment you walk in is perfect. They start by bathing your feet in warm water and essential oil, set you up in a room with open air and jungle sounds (with an outdoor private shower to wash off after the body treatments), and finish with a piece of local BriBri chocolate and a glass of water with fresh cucumber. I really wanted to have a great massage here but was unfortunately not the experience I had. My massage therapist didn’t speak English very well - so the regular check ins re pressure applied didn’t occur. I specified my concern area but it was another area that received a more pressurised approach. This resulted in me having a muscle spasm which ultimately ruined my massage. Otherwise I did not feel the pressure of the deep tissue massage was very adequate - perhaps the therapist was worried or hurting me again. I was also quite surprised that there was not much time spent on the neck and shoulders, which is what you’d expect for a 90 minute massage. I was told it’s because I got injured which cut the time short - but that isn’t a fault of mine. I don’t understand how the massage therapists error resulted in my massage being cut short - if anything I was at least expecting some form of guidance on how to take care of my back. I’m now left in a lot more pain post the massage and will have to go to physio when I return home. Quite unfortunate.

Otherwise it’s a very beautiful setting and the outdoor shower is lovely. I’ve had a lot of massages and I did feel like the massage therapists weren’t fully cognisant of my concerns or tried to rectify the situation. I did receive some oils as their way of apology, I do feel like more could have been done - at the least they could have advised how to take care of the muscle spasm.
